Getting started

ok i have read and read and then read some more. but the more i read the more i feel i should of started reading this forum MANY MANY MANY years ago.
can someone in a easy to under stand point me in the direction of getting started into prom burning?
what do i need to purchase to get started. my budget is limited, and my question biggest question would be... so far i only see needing to do this one time, (but if i had the equipt more times maybe)
I can have someone write the custom prom for me for $350. (unless someone know of somewhere cheaper) so which is better to do have it do for me or look into doing it myself?

If you have access to a laptop, you should be able to purchase just about all you need to burn your own for $350. There is a lot more to proper tuning than just a one time burn or paying someone for a single chip.

However, it is better if you enjoy learning about this stuff and like tuning on your car to get it really purrrrring.

1985 TA ECM QUESTIONS....

I JUST PICKED UP AN 85 TPI TRANS AM. MY QUESTION IS :
IS THE PLUG FOR MY ECM LOCATED UNDER THE INSTRUMENT PANEL IN THAT LITTLE ACCESS DOOR ? ALSO, IF I WANNA CHECK FOR ERROR CODES,WHICH PINS DO I JUMP IF YOURE LOOKING AT THE PLUG.
SHE STARTS ROUGH,BUT WHEN WARMED UP IT RUNS FINE.THE IDOL JUMPS FROM ABOUT 500 TO 1000 RPM WHEN IN PARK, AND INTERMITTENTLY THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, BUT GOES OFF AS SOON AS YOU GIVE IT GAS.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS
