I am new to this. I have a 93 corvette 5.7. To start at the begining I blew a water hose above my distributor. I fixed that and on the way home the car started to run real rough. I checked the codes and nothing showed up. It was determined that it probably contaminated the opti spark distributor. I have replaced that everything seemed to be fine when I started it and began to flush the coolant system. after running it for about 20 min the car shut off itself. It started back up and I noticed the check engine was light was on. Not sure if it was on when I started the car because I was paying attention to the temp gauges. Anyway I rechecked the codes and 36 Appears. I found this answer but I am not at all sure where the sensors are located or if there is a test to determine which one is or is not operating correctly. Can anyone please help.
Burn off at mass air flow sensor OR Problem in transmission shift OR Fault in direct ignition system OR Missing pulses in electronic spark timing signal
How is the car running currently? Does it stall out still/idle fine? If the vehicle is equipped with a mass air flow sensor...check it first. I had a MAF system on my camaro-when that sensor popps...you'll know it. It should look like a tubular sensor connected to you air induction system(before throttle body) Take a look inside. The sensor readings are derrived from a small electrical connection. the inside resembles what a light bulb looks like if the metal contacts from one end to the other have broken....the sensor went. They also have electronic boards on the outside of the sensor...it may have shorted as well. In my past experiences that sensor is usually the culprite. I'd be a bit concerned with the ignition items that made contact w/the coolant but if this problem resulted after...it may be the sensor. If you get a magnetic tipped screwdriver, tap onto the sensor....if it "flutters" the circut board on the sensor is KAPUT!!! Keep posting on how you make out
Thanks, The car will run and I checked the sensor in the induction and seems to be fine. The car runs fine until it reaches normal operating temp, then is when it wants to sputter and it will stall. then crank up hard but it will run a bit rough when you rev it up. Is this sensor the maf sensor or is it the one on the throttle body? Where is the burn off relay? From all I have been able to find online I believe this is the one I need to check or replace. There is very little room inside of this engine compartment and I do not want to be wasting time looking for and replacing the wrong relay. I do appreciate any guidance suggested.
Thanks again
Code 36- Distributor ignition system. Faulty high resolution (360X) pulse or multiple low resolution pulses detected. Check pigtail connector from distributor to main harness for any opens or shorts. Verify wiring is okay before replacing distributor
Thanks All,
The code I found was
Code 36 Burn off at mass air flow sensor OR Problem in transmission shift OR Fault in direct ignition system OR Missing pulses in electronic spark timing signal
I have cleared the ecm due to a dead battery and have recharged that.
Crusher Thanks for the link. I will see what else I can find. Any more advise would be greatly appreciated.
Cruser on this link It was showing a 16 pin connector mine is a 12 pin connector. What if any is the diiffrence? I found my code on a site with the 12 pin connector. I don't know just thinking to myself? Any thoughts??? Stumped
We just went through the "Code 36" mess with our '87 GTA. We were lucky, we just needed to replace the MAF relays ($20 worth of parts) vs the sensor itself...... all better now!
Hey guys, I Have a 88 Trans Am GTA with a L98 5.7. I am also having troubles with the ses code 36. In the morning when its cold or there is dew/ moisture in the air my car will throw the code but not right away. Normally the car wont set the code mid day but if it does i just shut the car down, let it sit for a couple min. and restart the car. most of the time that clears the SES light. The car starts up and drives fine for about 5 to 10 min. then spudders a lil and here comes the ses light. From that point on the car acts as if its running on 4 cylinders and acts like it doesnt want to shift. Other times the car starts off doing that then it gradually goes away to the point that the car just accelerates horribly then bolts off like i hit a nitrous switch. Symptoms that are produced are horrible gas milage, strong exhaust odor, irratic idle, stalling, loss of power, ect.
I've went through 6 mass air flow sensors that included 3 different types for that year. A circut board style, a heated wire style with a single post (both types proving to be the wrong type) and the style that i originally pulled off, the heated wire with a Y post. The best I got was out of one Y post type and it didnt throw a code for two weeks, now it is. Ive replaced the MAF relay and MAF Burn Off relay (both located next to the drivers hood hinge along side the squair fuel pump relay) at this point I am drawing at straws... It is possible that the MAF that i currently have is faulty but that is unknown. My next step is replacing the ECM (computer) I dont want to replace the computer...
If there is anyone that can help I would greatly appreciate it, you can reach me at susukirf600r@yahoo.
