check engine light stays on

Looking for help!!!! The check engine light stays on all the time. If you short a/b light just stays on wont flash 12 code even. Engine will start but it is running in limp mode. I have tried changing the ecm and the memcal but get the same thing. I know its not reading the prom but why? It also wont run off my emulator. I have checked all the fuses in the painless wirng harness. Cut power and tried to clear any codes no luck. When you turn the key on the check engine light comes on but does not flash. I am using moates flash and burn and ostrich emulator.

Found ground wire was loose for wiring harness. Fixed that still have same problem. Can a loose ground burn up the ECM?

Are you able to borrow and try another ECM and PROM and see if it helps.
Did you do something before this happened ?

Re: check engine light stays on

I have 2 ECMs and 4 or 5 chips all do the same thing. I just got a 3rd ECM off Ebay I will try it when it gets here. I just built a new motor and was just starting to try and tune it. Was using moates emulator and noticed it was not working so put the chip back in and thats all I have been able to do. I was able to break in the motor with the old chip that I was using.

Re: check engine light stays on

Ok I got a 3rd ECM and still have the same problem. The check engine light stays on does not flash when you turn on the key. It will not flash any codes light just stays on constant. Engine runs but is in limp mode. I am starting to rule out the ecm after 3 of them. Its a painless wiring harness is there anything else that can cause this. HELP!!!!

Re: check engine light stays on

A bad connection somewhere could cause this, or an unplugged connector (that dosent have an errorcode) could cause this problem ?

What ECMs are they ? 1227165 ? Is it all yours ?

Re: check engine light stays on

They are all 7165 All the ECMs are mine I dont know anyone else that runs 7165s. Best I remember motor was running fine breaking in the motor then it started to cut out around 4000 RPM because I was running out of gas. Put more fuel in tank and fired it back up it ran fine for a min or so then check engine light came on and it went into limp mode. Plan on going over the wiring harness today and check all connection.

Re: check engine light stays on

Checked all the connections and even if it was a bad connection I should still get the default code 12 all I get is a steady engine light with no flashing ever. Guess I need to find someone that can test my ECM for me.

Re: check engine light stays on

Well today and tonight I pulled out the wiring harness and went over every connection. The only thing I found was a bare tan wire to the air temp sensor. Fixed that and put it all back on . Unpluged the ECM and checked all the grounds and all the hot wires all checked out ok. But still have the same problem steady light and won't read any codes not even code 12. Going to try a 4th used ECM this coming week. Maybe buy a new one from the parts store next. I also burned a new prom and tried that.

Re: check engine light stays on

Ok I checked all the wiring best I could. Pulled the upper plenum off and checked all wires there. Checked wires going thru firewall don't see any problems.I have power to all the wire that show to be hot wires and ground wires checked for ground. Bought a new ECM and new maf power and maf burnoff and fuel pump relays. Disconnected the battery hooked it all backup. Still getting the same problem check engine light on all the time engine running in limp mode and it won't even flash 12 code. what else could it be??????

Re: check engine light stays on

Well I found out what I screwed up. I just set down and started looking at the ECM hanging out the glove box. I was hoping maybe that would fix it!!!!
I started going over what I was doing when check engine light came on. And thats when I remembered that the emulator was pluged in and I was make changes that I burned to the chip. Yep the bin was corrupted or maybe the chip anyway I stated over with a new bin 89vet 6e on a new chip and it started working again. The SES light goes out and I can pull codes again. Well at least I have a new ECM and relays now. ( I am so stupid!!! ) Thanks for all the help.
