My ECM is literally shot. I had a friend of mine in the car with me tonight and his gun missfired and put a .45 cal hollow point through my ECM. My car is a stock 89 camaro rs with a 305 tbi. I need to find a new ecm asap. Now my quection is should I just go to advance auto or order one online. I know I need to get the numbers off the ecm to get a replacemnt but is there anything else i need to know about swapping them out. I have never messed with an ECM before so any tips would be greatly apperciated. I am also wondering if I get a different ECM would it give me any power gains or improve anything or should i just stick with a stock replacement. Pease help I have no clue about computer controlled aspects of a car I stick to mechanical stuff only.

The ECM is a 1228746. You will need to use the PROM out of the old one and use it in the new new. If your buddy killed it too, then a new PROM is also required.
Remove the ECM from the car. Will need to loosen a few nuts and remove two connectors. Then open the small cover on top of the ECM (two screws, 1/4" hex heads). Under that is the PROM in the plastic carrier. Carefully remove it.
Once you get another ECM place that PROM into it. Note the small marking that shows pin 1. It goes toward the inside of the ECM.
The '8746 ECM was used in the '89 - '92 f-body cars along with Caprices. Can also get one from autozone, napa, carquest and so on.
And tell your buddy to keep his finger off the trigger. Bet he's glad it wasn't his big toe that was on the receiving end of that round.
Thanks for the info, I didnt know about the prom. The bullet hit the top right corner of the ECM. I am mad but atleast no one got hurt. He shot it with my old 1911 that has a very sensitive trigger. I learned two things from this though, remington golden saber rounds dont like sheet metal and a 3lb trigger on a 1911 is not for amature shooters.
I have to ask the obvious question: where did the bullet go after passing through the ECM? Is there a hole in the firewall, the fender or the floorboard?
I got the car fixed yesterday. I dont know if it is my imagination or not but my throttle response seems better. Thanks for the info RBob.
The bullet did not go through the firewall. it was a standard velosity hollow point. It went through the top right corner of the ECM about an inch from the corner. It blew a good size hole in the front of the ECM and peeled the back of the metal casing back a good two inches before it blew through the casing. It bounced off of the firewall and hit my friend in the leg but luckily it had lost most of its force and left a nice little bruise. He is not carying a 1911 anymore though, it kind of shook him up.

I think it's more of an issue of guns aren't for idiots. I hope you smacked him in the head after you found out he's alright.
