85 ECM in 86 trans am

Hello, my friends 1986 T/A has a burnt ECM. i have a 85 ECM from a 1985 305 TPI camaro. Will the 85 ecm work in his 86 trans am? they are both MAF TPI vehicles. if not a direct hookup. what would i have to do to make it work?

85 uses a 6870 with $1F mask

86 uses a 7165 with $32 mask

I believe it will work with original chip and memcal from that ECU. Does 85 have a different dash? If so it may not function corrrectly. Same tranny? Same gears(not so important).

Re: 85 ECM in 86 trans am

They are both stock transmissions. 700r4's i know the one in my firends T/A is electronic. so i depends if the 85 had an electronic 700r4. as for the dash. its also sotck. in both vehicles. i belive the camaro speedo only goes to 85. were as the t/a's is a 140 speedo. i know the speedo in my 83 camaro was mechanical and it looked the same as the speedo in the 85 camaro. so if the ECM is for a mechanical speedo what problems would that give me?

I dont think it would work. I mean sure it could be made to work but i think it would be more trouble than its worth. The 85 ECM is an oddity with a separate MAF module to control the burn off function. Personally ide just get the correct ECM.

Re: 85 ECM in 86 trans am

The MAF is definately different for 85 & 86. I also think the wiring is different. All you need is any LB9 or L98 ECM from 1986 - 1989, you could use the original Cal-pack,...
