OK bought this car from a friend 6 months ago. Car always drove perfect. about a month ago car started not running right, idle ok but then die out when given gas. WQorsen as car would warm up. like bad coil or bad fuel pump or bad gas.
Shop cked fuel preasure and fuel pump fine, all electricals fine MAP, coil , dist cap, control module under cap. drained gas tank put new gas. local shop did a diagnostic test and found no problems except they told me injectors are bad.
The shop told me three injectors are reading very low ohms like 2 or 3, and the rest are all over the place. Of course they wanted 1700 to 2100 to replace all injectors.
The car ran so good and then went to **** real quick and with the low miles makes no sense. Car never sat longer then 2 weeks since I have owned it.
I may run some some injector cleaner with 5 gals of gas to maybe clean up a few injectors that may be clogged????
Do these injectore just fail after 20 years????
Any help would be great I did all I could. The car is bone stock too!!
First of all, if they are multecs you are lucky that they lasted 20 years. If the info that your shop gave to you is accurate....adding a fuel injector cleaner is not going to help you. Once the coil goes bad on an injector there is no way to repair them. Sounds like you need a set of injectors. Do not let them rip you off... there is no way that you need to spend $1700 or more to replace them!!!!
Yes, I replaced the ones in my '92 four or five years ago after they started to fail. Same failure: shorted coils. Replacing them with Bosch (also FMS) injectors of the same flow rating will fix it right up. 5.0L is 19#/hr, 5.7l is 22 #/hr.
Check the TPI board for how-to's on doing the work yourself. It is rather easy.
in my 89 GTA i had the same problem I of course bought new fuel injectors it cost 1800 i think it was 1,000 for labour and 800 or so for the parts but they did a good job and i have no complaints.
Honestly this is a weekend and a 6 pack DIYer job. Maybe even just a pounder. You go to Autozone get the TPI intake gaskets and you go to a place like Summit or RC Engineering and spend 40-60 each for a set of Bosches (maybe less if you got a set of cleaned/flowed rebuilds) and you pop the runners/plenum off then pop the rail and put em in. It's actually NOT a big deal. Like I said it isn't even a "12 pack" job. If a pro shop is charging you more than 3 hours (read:~250 in labor to do this they are ripping you off!) I guarantee it's not taking them 3 hours to do it. If they are really good and in practice it would probably be 1 to 1.5.
I AM PLANNING ON DOING IT MYSELF, i just did not think they could go bad so fast. the car ran great as if new, then one day i drove the car 10 miles parked it for 15 minutes, then started it and it would not even idle.
let the car sit for 1 hour, started up fine and
I ran the piss out of it 5 miles home ran perfect. Ever since then a diff story.
So the factory stock in jectors would go bad after 20 years and just 5000 miles????
thanks i will buy injectors now which way should i go???? which ones? thanks for all the help,
i wanted to keep the car all original but I do not want mess with injectors again either.

WTF??????????????????????????
Multecs are Notorious for coil failure, so yes they can go bad after 20yrs.
Go with a set of bosch III's you will be very happy. If you are interested in a set, give us a call, we offer a 10% discount for tgo members.
I went to Pull A Part and got a set of injectors off a Lumina 3.1 with the correct resistance (12.6 ohms) and put 12 volts to 'em , sprayed with carb cleaner and blew them out with 40 lbs of air.
Cost $ 6.00 an injector.
Did the same thing to my Stealth last year and it runs fine.
Also got a throttle body w/ position sensor and IAC for $ 30.
And an EGR for $ 10
