DIY WB O2 heater circuit

I'm planning on building a WB O2. When I looked at the DIY-EFI elec schematic for the heater control, it seems much more complicated than I imagined it would be. An EE friend from work feels the same way and he thinks it can be simplified considerably.

This guy is really sharp w/elecs, but we're both newbies to EFI tweaking, and there may very well be some variables we haven't considered.

I know it has to produce 1.5 amps at 10.5 +\- 0.5 volts, but it still seems like over-kill.

Anyone have any input as to why the circuit is so complex?
Anyone made-up simplier substitute circuitry and care to elaborate?

You need to warm up the sensor in a very controlled manner, it operates at 1,800dF. Too much current at any time and the porclean cracks rendering it to junk.

There's 4-5 years of snippets at the DIY-EFI.org site about WBs.

Seems like NKT has figured out they are the only band in town, and now the price has jumped to about $500 per sensor.

The heater circuit from my understanding isn't very good. It defiantly works when it has enough voltage and the parts are cheap, circuit is simple. I'll probably end up co-designing a new circuit with a friend of mine (an EE). The low voltage is a big problem from where I stand. Oh well, still can't believe the kit was as easy as it was. Big props go out to Bob and the rest for putting forth so much effort and making it public.
It's a shame NTK jacked the price up so high, they can kiss my ***. I've never heard of a price hike like the one they just pulled. It should be in the Guinness book of records under "bastardized business's."
Bruce, did you get my e-mail?

Humm, wonder if the Honda cars have a seperate module to control the O2 heater... That would make it easy...
I tried to order my DIY WB O2 board a couple of weeks ago. Got a reply saying it would be a few weeks at least. Anyone know how long the backlog is for these boards?
My new eng should be running by this weekend,,, and I really want/need to have a WBo2 up and going.

BTW, there's a guy on Ebay selling new WB o2 sensors for $180-190.
