I have an original HyperTech chip for my '86 IROC. It's a 305-TPI with a 700-R4 tranny. I want to install this chip but I have some minor issues with the car and I don't want the chip install to do any damage to the car. Problem 1 is I need valve stem seals. It doesn't burn oil too bad, just when it sits for a while and you start it up you get smoke for about 2 seconds, then it's all good. other than that, there may be a minor timing issue but I just did a tune up; plugs, wires, rotor, cap, oil & filter, fuel filter, and air filter. So will I see any benefit from the hypertech chip? I'm not looking for it to become an instant screamer, I know that the stock 190 HP motor won't deliver that until I get in there and drop a cam and do some other things, but I'm just looking for a minor advantage even in things like fuel economy and general smooth operation. Any suggestions or input?
Thx in advance

Do a search on hypertech, and other aftermarket chips. You may FEEL a difference, but if measured, such as a G-tech, or 1/4 mile run, you may actually notice a decrease in performance. The best solution is to burn a chip specific for YOUR vehicle, not your APPLICATION.
The valve stem seals leaking is a normal SBC issue. Many of us have come to almost expect it on a vehicle with a few miles on it. Just so that it's not excessive, I wouldn't get too concerned with it.
As for improving what you have, there are many things you can do to it. Just use the search button, and you'll find more than you have time to read!
Good luck, and welcome to the board...

We don't refer to them as "Hyper Junk" on the DIY Prom Board for no reason. Waste of money. The only use they have is to pull the eprom from memcal and install a flash prom in place so you can burn your own.

Perfect use for them...I bought a spare ECU with a Hypertech chip and did this exact thing. FWIW I ran the chip at the track back to back with stock and a ARAP chip. While it performed better than the stock the the ARAP was faster...
Stock 14.9@91
Hyper 14.7@92
ARAP 14.6@93+
If you can get one cheap than go for it so you can pop out the chip and plug in a ZIF instead, that way you have a quick chip changing setup...it takes me all but 2 seconds to install or remove my chip now.
