10k Resistor needed, or not?

Hey guys, long story short, I want to get into prom burning. I figure the first step is datalogging.

I understand a 10k resistor is needed when starting communications between the car and laptop. But I hear some people take out the resistor after communication has started. Can you do this, and do you recomend this? Advantages?

Thanks

Yes, with the '165 ECM the 10K resistor is required to start data logging. Once logging has started the resister can/should be removed. The reason it should be removed is that the ECM changes modes with the 10K resistor in place. This can be detrimental to the purpose of loogging for tuning.

IIRC, or, I may not remember correctly, some of the free software out there handles the 10K in/out for you.

Thanks for the reply. It seems everyone has a different opinion on this. Here is what Craig Moates said about the 10k resistor:

You can remove it, but it is not necessary. As long as your ECM is communicating, you'll be in 'normal' mode operationally speaking.

The 10k is required for connection. Removal of the 10k after connection is optional, not necessary, but recommended due to the nature RBob highlighted.

Clear as mud?

My car will connect sometimes without the 10k resisitor. Better to have the option when you need it. And with the 10k, you are in "ALDL" mode, which does change how the ECM runs the engine. I have seen and gotten bitten with it myself. For the longest time I was using a scan tool from EASE diagnostics, and found out that it only conects to my car in ALDL mode. The interface switches the 10k in/out via software. So I cannot do anything with it. I was chasing false knock at WOT for years. In ALDL mode, there are spark adders. ( But they can be removed)

Nice ride, you are close to me sort of!

I noticed with the 10k connected my car ran a lot differently, so I too believe that something is changed when it is connected. Once I took the resistor out, my car ran like normal again, and I still was getting data.

Yes, this is already deemed fact. No guessing about it.

How do you go about removing them? Is it possible in the 6e mask/bins?

Set the aldl spark constant to zero.
Look at a hac to get the bin location for the constant.

After searching around a little I found out that the ALDL adder is located at address 23 in the bin. It has a multiplier of .3515625.

If you're using tunerpro, you can add it the ECU by right clicking in the constants box, then using the Insert Item... selection.

I figured it's best under constant, since that's what it is, so select constant. Then the address is at 23, so input that.

Then go under the Conversion tab, and edit the Equation Format (it should be x * .3515625)

Now you can change the ALDL adder easily. It is 8.1 degrees in the ARAP bin, so every time you enter ALDL mode you add 8.1 degrees timing.

I hope this helps someone else, it helped me.

So some of you guys are saying you can get data without using a 10k resistor?

I ordered the ALDU1 with a built in switch. I guess i'll just turn off the 10k resistor when it starts communicating.

Is there a way to set the ALDL spark constant to zero in $32B?

Re: 10k Resistor needed, or not?

wow this is interesting...i'm gonna have to try without the resistor. this is what frustrates me about tuning...everyone says to do it on your own, but when i go to look for information on how to use the equipment and information about software programs that control tuning, there is very little information. where do you learn this stuff at??

Re: 10k Resistor needed, or not?

The aldl spark adder is in the definition file that comes with tunerpro. It's in the constants section. It's also in my expanded version, available at the link in my sig.
EDIT:
Oops just noticed you asked if it was in 32B, yes, it's there at 024 address, conversion is x/2.84 I think.

Re: 10k Resistor needed, or not?

Thought I'd chime in too. I use an AutoProm and keep it connected more or less permanently behind the front dash. Initially I left the ALDL cable hooked in too. I had the increased idle speed (the "ALDL mode" discussed above) didn't know about the other features like the spark adder. What I did notice too was that whenever I would connect my laptop (like the "ECM is communicating" mentioned by IROCthe5.7) the idle would reset and go back to normal. Apprecaite a confirmation that when you do connect and it goes into "operational mode" that the data logging is accurate.

Re: 10k Resistor needed, or not?

Using this address/conversion I get 8.45 on my stock bin. Does this sounds right? The ARAP bin is supposed to be 8.1 but I suppose mine could be different.
