Well, I thought I would make sure I could "burn a chip" before commiting to the mods on my ECM. So I hooked up the AutoProm, TP-RT recognized it, I installed one of the new AT29C256 chips with the notch toward the ZIF handle, opened up TP's ROM R/W window, selected the 29C256, and told it to "read" the chip. Worked fine, looked at the buffer ("edit buffer"), full of junk as expected. Then I chose "Erase Chip" in prep for installing my dowloaded "stock"(?) akaj1147.bin. But that got an error. It says: Erasing Device ERROR: Erase Command returned failure Just for "what if", I loaded the bin using "Load File to Buffer" and tried "Program Chip". That also returned the following error: ERROR: PROM I/O returned failure. I read the TP docs, and your AutoProm docs and couldn't find anything to indicate what was up with this. Any ideas?

Well, I found the answer by looking at the Burn1 docs. There is a picture there that cleared up my misunderstanding of how the chip is installed in the AutoProm. I had #1 toward the lever, but I also had the chip offset to that side. But the chip should be offset away from the lever. The instructions are clear now, but I guess I just didn't get it the first time.

Here it is for any other clueless newb in the future that may search on those error messages.

"g. 32-pin ZIF Socket
Chips go in this socket to be read or programmed. Chips should ALWAYS be placed farthest from the backplane with their notches facing toward the backplane. This means 'chip at bottom, notch toward handle or up'."

Since you are programming a 28 pin EEPROM in a 32 pin burner, the notch on the EEPROM neeeds to be pointed towards the ZIF socket handle but the EEPROM needs to sit in the socket as far away from the handle as possible. IOW, when correctly installed, there should be 4 empty spaces (2 on each side) in the socket nearest the handle. HTH
