Help with ALDL cable

I just made a cable with the serial to usb converter. When i go to plug it in it doesnt transmit anything. I have an external 12v source. My laptop makes these noise when somthing gets unpluged. it keeps doing this till i unplug the ground?? Any ideas?
My car is a 89 camaro rs with a 305 tbi

TTT...I guess I need to get a cable that a serial to USB coverter since my new laptop only has USB ports...any info on this is good info for me.

If it makes the noise when unplugging/plugging the ALDL cable then you probably have it wired incorrectly. Things tend to make noise under high current changes. I would check the cable for a short to ground or power. Don't plug it in until you verified that you don't have an electrical short.
It is easy to mix up the wiring on the RS-232 connector side. Make sure you wired it properly at the DB9 (9 pin) connector.

I had a problem with my aldl cable and usb adapter too..
Check the settings in your device manager for the usb adapter, make sure you don't have any conflicts and the drivers are installed for it. When I used mine it set it'self up on com 13. Changed it to com 2 and it worked great.
