Bought a somewhat cheap ALDL cable off of ebay. thought something was up when he didnt show a pic of the other side of the connector, only the serial side. anyhow, one side has a serial connector, the other has a black and red wire coming off of it. inside the serial connector is i think 2 little transistors. I tried sticking the red and black wires into the A (black) and E (red) plugs on the ALDL port, loaded up winaldl (win95 laptop) and tried giving it a go. com port 1 says ok, and it looks like it's refreshing but everything is blank except for CT which says 106 all the time. i also tried putting it on all ECM types just to see what would happen. the diagram he sent me looks like this:
EXCEPT the R2 does not goto a 12+ it goes to pin 4 on the serial connector, is there something wrong with that? it has no cigarette light adapter for power like i've seen on some others, any help appreciated
I never had any luck getting the two transistor cable to work. The Diagram you posted is what I used whan i made mine. I think that the self powered cable doesn't alwasy work with every ECM.
In any event, you have all the parts in front of you, and with a little soldering you can have a working cable, just follow the diagram you posted.

oh, you know what. we didn't even pick up on the fact that there needed to be a jumper between B and A. Paperclip worked, got a 10k resistor that puts her in ALDL mode. I believe she idled a little higher when I turned the car on in ALDL mode, but i'm not sure. winaldl doesnt have a closed loop flag checked, thats interesting. what other programs are available for windows 95? (old laptop)
yeah i've done a little searching and noticed people have gotten higher idles with ALDL mode
let me get something straight, with a paperclip jumped in there, you're not supposed to start the car? with ALDL you can? is factory test mode anything important?
one last thing, someone explain to me the difference between 165 and 8192 (and a bunch of other numbers that begin with 8)?
do i have both? can i use either? ive seen references to these all over when looking through ALDL threads

thanks for the replies
I'm about to start data logging myself, and was wondering what you did about starting the car with the ALDL cable. Did you start the car, then plug the ALDL cable in? Or, did you plug the cable in first, then start the car?
