I recently swapped out the 1228063 ECU in my '88 TBI Camaro with a junk yard 1227747. As the directions I recieved from people on this board who have done the swap I cut C-15 and D-15 and swapped A-11 and D-02. I programmed a PROM, verified it (both with the programming software as well as writing the PROM back to the hard drive and loading it into CATS and looking for changes), and placed it into the slot. I also put the Calibration Pack that I purchased into its slot. When I tried to start the car the injectors sprayed so much fuel that it was drowning the engine and it wouldn't start. The SES light was also on. I plugged in the ALDL scanner and scanned for codes. The ECU was throwing two codes: "PROM Error" and "Calibration Pack Missing". What do I need to do? Is this ECU bad? Is there some way to test it before going to the dealership and forking out $214 for a new one? I'm seriously considering converting to carbeuration, but I'd much rather get this fuel injection working correctly.
Not wanting to sound insulting but, are you sure you have the calpak and prom installed in the proper direction? There should be a tiny number 1 on each of the sockets. The notch in the chips goes to that end. Disconnected the battery while installing the 2 pieces?
If the ECM is junk, the yard should give you another.
just for reference, calpak for a 350TBI 7747 is part# 16060836, the 305 may be the same.
Yeah, they're oriented correctly. The PROM's are oriented with the notches facing the same direction (which is where the (1) is). I guess the Cal-Pak is oriented correctly, it was in the carrier when I bought it and I haven't removed it.
Well, I just disconnected the battery, re-installed the PROM and cal-pak, reconnected the battery, and scanned for codes. The scanner came back "No Trouble Codes Found" but the SES light was still burning and it still won't start. I didn't get to look at the injectors to see how much they were spraying, but judging from how the car acted (and how it smelled after I got out) I'd say it was just more of the same.
I guess you have a bad one. Isn't the first time. I had one where everything looked normal but it wouldn't fire the injectors...
Second one from the yard worked just fine.
Maybe open the case up to see if there is any garbage inside. Not that it will fix anything, maybe give you some peace of mind. I hate not knowing what is wrong.
I've been kinda suspect of the PROMs. I'm wanna test it with a PROM that I know for a fact is good before I throw it all in the toilet. I'll e-mail you the .BIN I'm trying to use.
