See below explanation from a guy selling a 730 replacement ECM on Ebay. I am looking to convert to SD but I just want to make sure this is valid. Also how would it be faster than the 730 or is it just BS?
Greetings, this auction is for a new, remanufactured 1990-92 Tuned Port Injection speed density ECM(computer). This one is
actually service number 16198262. It is a direct replacement for the 1227730, and is a quicker, better unit. It does not include
the EPROM(chip). We can calibrate a custom chip for you, exactly to your specifications.
I know this isn't part of the question and may or may not help the situation. By why bother getting an ecm off of Ebay? You can go to a bone yard and get one fairly cheap. I got an extra "junk" 165 ecm(just for the ecm header), a '6344'(730 replacement), a map sensor, two map sensor plugs, and all three pig tails that go to the 730 ecm for only 40bucks!
Go to the tech article and get the Ecm interchange info that was just recently posted. If you don't get the info, any repritable boneyard will have the hollander book(one where the ecm interchange info was taken from).
Just thought i'd offer a suggestion,
Brendan

I guess that would depend on where you are. I spent all day saturday scouring our local junkyards... Not a 7730 to be found! I was pretty discouraged by the end of the day.
Wow, Down here in San Diego you can not throw a rock & hit a car with a 7730 in it. mind you they are all 6 cyl versions but they are good ecm's NTL. you can order the memcal off the internet if you dont have one.

Check out any GM A, J, L or N body with a 3.1 V6 with SD from 89/90 - 93/94 in it. Just don't use a W body. Different years switched between MAF and SD and OBDI and OBD II. That is why the years are slighly vague.
You can tell which "body" it is by checking the 4th digit of the VIN#.
Well, I certainly hope that the 16198262 will suit my purposes... That's what I was able to aquire. What's the deal with stock memcals? They seem to be going way up in price. I ended up paying $135 for the ECM with the stock memcal... And that was a deal! Corvette Shanty wanted $150 plus shipping, GM wanted $77 just for the memcal.
I just ordered the '730 memcal for a price of under $40. You can order it cheaply from Dal Slabaugh @ Vandevere Olds or even from gmpartsdirect.com, though they get you for shipping.
I wish I'd known that yesterday! I paid $65 for the ECM, and an additional $58 for the memcal, plus shipping. Shoot, Corvette Shanty wanted $150+ shipping for the ECM+ memcal, and Arizona Speed and Marine wanted $170 for just the ECM! This after I spent last Saturday going to every junkyard in Fresno and coming up empty. Now, I just need to find a green plug...
