Should I burn my own chip, and what all can you program??

I'm still debating whether or not I should order the stuff to burn my own PROM or not. The main reasons of me not wanting to are: the fear of me severely messing something up that cannot be fixed without buying a new PROM, and the fear of me not knowing what to set each "setting" at and the car performing like crap. So, first off, how hard is it to learn? Do the programmers come with books to walk you through a burn process? Also, is there a list of the "settings" that a chip comes with stock, so I know where to start? Finally, does anybody have a list of what all you can program (i.e. spark advance, injector pulse, etc.)? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can always go back to where you started from. If you save the original file.

Have you read Traxions article?.

Just reading through old postings where will give you an idea of what's going on.

Got to www.tunercat and poke around and you'll find a listing of what can be modified in each editor

As Bruce said, read the "Prom Burning Introduction" link at the top of this board. It is a great starting point of how you burn a chip, the various equipment you need and where to get it, plus useful links to other articles. It may look overwhelming at first, but after reading it a few times it becomes clearer, and once you get the equipment it is pretty self-explanatory.

Since you have SD, you may wish to consider converting to a Flash Prom AT29C256. The Flash Prom costs only pennies more (and I mean pennies) than a regular eprom, doesn't need a UV eraser, can be re-programmed virtually indefinitely and cuts erasing/programming time down to seconds.

As Bruce also said, once your read your original Eprom, you just save it so you never loose it. But if you do, you can download the AUJP BIN from DIY-EFI.ORG, or get one of a half dozen (or more) guys with SD TPI L98s to send you a copy.

I thorougly agree with Bruce's comment of reading the old articles. The earliest articles deal more with "how do I get started". Then there are "tuning tips" specifically with SD (just search on "P730"), and then various other posts; just search on a "subject".

And lastly, when you have a specific question on "what does this do" or "how do I do this" and you have already "searched" on the topic and need clarification, just post a question here.

The SD TPI system ($8D) is probably the most defined ecm there is. In fact, it is the reason TunerCat is having to develop a new version of their program so it can handle more "Constants" and "Tables". If you contact TunerCat and politely ask them for an older copy of the 8D.TDF to evaluate it with their software (available for a 30 day trial, just download it from www.tunercat.com ), you can then see all the things you can change. Tunercat is generally pretty good that way.

You will need a BIN to check out the software. Go to www.diy-efi.org and go to the BIN Downloads and search for the "1227730" ecm and look for the AUJP BINs.

I agree, When I first read TRAXION's article, I was like WHOAH!!, but now, burning is really simple, its the tuning that is the time consuming part.
