APU1 or Ostrich or NVSRam ?

I have a 91 TPI 5 speed.... I have another companies ALDL (Turbo Link).

I see the Apu1 is all encompasing, I see the ostrich only emulates (no aldl) and the nvsram, does it do both?

I want to be able to tune my car and only my car. I am going to have a dedicated car PC. which route should I go. Later I plan to Procharge it, so I would update injectors / size / programming...

Also, will my turbolink software work with moates ALDL (apu1) ?

Just looking for best solution in my case.

Sounds like you have no real reason to burn chips, so I'd just get an Ostrich and and ALDU1 and save a few bucks in the process.
Thats what I use. I haven't touched my chip burner since the Ostrich arrived. You'll probably find that you'll like to hide it up under the dash also, and just hang the USB cable out. If you do that, you've made the box inaccessible and given up the ability to burn chips anyhow..

I have played with emulators for quite some time, but still prefer to burn chips. Emulators are a failure point that should be avoided for every day driving. Emulators are great for testing/learning but you need to stay focused and pay attention to how things are reacting and many lose track of this while emulating.

I think the best bang for the buck is the NVSRAM module. A chip burner would be required for a one time burn. Maybe you could get someone to do the first burn and then all you would need is the NVSRAM module. It does emulation right through the ALDL link. Also does ALDL data logging. With the NVSRAM module and a plain ALDL cable you can do emulation and ALDL data logging. A cheap reliable setup.

YOu won't go wrong choosing any of the choices. I should note, however, that both the APU1 and Ostrich use the same RAM as the NVSRAM. =) I wouldn't call the emulator a failure point. My T/A has been running full time off of an AutoProm for about 8 months now.

They're all great products. Some require a bit more work to install and get going (NVSRAM is not "instantaneous" and takes a fair bit of work to install, but the Ostrich/APU1 require a memcal adapter to be installed). It pretty much comes down to budget and what your goals are.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
NVSRam more work to install, does not work with Tuner Pro...
But monitors ALDL and can pre programmed through it...

I understand the Ostrich doesn't do ALDL, just emulates... about this battery thing... if the battery dies, I must replace it and upload a bin for it to work (will have limp home mode)... or will replacing the battery give it juice to read what's on the chip (last bin uploaded)?

With the Ostrich there should not be a problem with your battery dying. Don't forget you will be using your laptop, if you save your file you are good to go. You should be able to get ALDL data from your diagnostic port which is supported in TunerPro. All you would need is a cable.

FWIW - I have had my Ostrich tucked in the dash for almost a year. Same batteries. I have a 84 Vette so it is tight spaces and I am also in AZ where it is real damn hot in the summer. I have had not issues.

I'm running mine full time as well, and Dallas gets plenty hot in the summer, too. No emulator problems with the Ostrich on this end either.

My Ostrich has been running the car since May '05 with zero problems. IIRC Craig Moates calculated the battery should last longer than the car. Who knows. Just burn a backup chip.............remember redundancy measures are why part of the Carolina coast did not turn to toast last century when an A bomb fell but did not "go critical"

I've got the same amount and type of experience with the Ostrich as DM91RS. Love mine, never had a problem with it.

Ok, next question, it says the APU1 (autoprom) is also an emulator, but I see nothing about a battery... does it have one, or does it need one?

Anyone use turbo-link with their apu1 or moates aldl?

Thanks,
Rafael

Only the Ostrich uses the Battery. I have both the Autoprom and the Ostrich. They both work great. I have had the Auotprom permantely installed in my Typhoon since it came out. Only problem I have had was when I boneheaded it and upload a blank bin... LOL I recently upgraded it to the Bluetooth version so I can so some wireless emulation. It is great to be able to update the bin or see the ALDL stream when you are out working on the engine since the Autoprom does both ALDL and Emulation.

When I started to help test Code 59 that was being worked on, I used my Ostrich so I could switch to several different banks that had different versions of the code on it for testing. Works great.

I am not familiar with the NVRAM module yet. I will be ordering one soon since we need some more space for our code to store variables. Can't wait to see what Turbodig and 1981TTA can do with it on the code59 project.
