i have a 92 chevy truck. i nt to start programming but i dont know what to buy. im thinking about the ostrich, the apu1 autoprom, or the burn1 flash and burn. any help wouldbe appreciated.

First of all you need to determine what version ECU you currently have in your truck. I'm quite sure it's a 7747. You need to determine if you want to start tuning that, or upgrade to a different ecu. It doesn't have as much power as the 16197427 which is in the newer TBI trucks, but that also means it's not quite as complicated for a beginner.

On the other hand, the 16197427 has air spark and fuel decoupled, whereas the 7747 Spark and Fuel Tables work hand-in-hand (you change one, the other is altered slightly, making a constant run-around circle with tuning).

My suggestion is to keep reading.

The ostrich only emulates, so you'll need an aldl cable also for your laptop. This isn't suggested for a beginner. You need to learn to do burn chips (your changes take longer, but you don't need to be making big changes at this point in time, AND you WILL make big changes if you have a change on the fly emulator).

Autoprom is a lot of power, and a lot of money when your unsure of your current pathway into tuning. It does however allow emulation and datalogging in a single USB cable to your laptop.

The burn 1 just burns chips, so your going to still need an ALDL cable to datalog. This is what I suggest you start out with.

Keep Reading, Reading, Reading, Reading. Just a hint, i've been focused on 2 different ECU's for about 2 years now as a hobby just like the rest here, and I am just learning to proficiently hac the code so that I can understand the more in depth functions of the ECU's.

there is a pretty steep learning curve in chip tuning, if you don't like to read & learn, it may not be for you. i have read every one of the stickies here at least once, some 3 or 4 times.

what 1badz71tahoe said is true, find what ECM you have & read everything you can about it. get the bin file your truck has & then download TunerPro & start playing with it. you'll also need to get the right definition files for the mask your ECM & bin use.
more than likely you can down load the bin you have from here, ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/pub/gmecm/bin_lib/
you'll probably need to pull your ECM out & get the numbers off of it & the PROM to know for certain.

also, read everything you can about the Ostrich, the burn1, & the AutoProm.
at this point you haven't spent any money so i think you can make a better decision on what you need to buy, thats the way i did it & i choose the AutoProm because it does everything i need all in one package.
