Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

New to the tuning world,

1986 Camaro w/ 305 LB9, 165 ECM, $32 def...
Using TunerPro RT and Moates' AutoProm.

I have been readin a lot of stuff, I get the feeling that I'm going to want to use $6E rather than $32, now I'm not very confident about going and slapping in the ARAP bin. I took the ARAP and disabled VATS and set injectors single and double to 19.33 like my stock bin. The timing table has a lot more timing than my stock bin. I mean the SA table is reaching up around 47*. I'm not very experienced yet but isnt that way too much?

I'm also unable to datalog yet, which is also why I'm weary about putting ARAP bin in my car. It seems that the 165 ECMs are common to have dataloging problems, but has not worked right yet, if it does anything, it will show me that I'm going 204 mph, 5100 rpm, 230+ engin temp... just rediculous numbers.

so...

If anyone has a tip or a link for me to read, so that I can sort out the datalog problem or the using ARAP concern, I'd really appreciate it.

thanks.

Re: Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

Cancel all that stuff about the dataloging, I just got it working! Must have missed something my prior tries.

According to those logs, my car is quite lean, about 132-150 BLMs commonly. I'll look into that separately first.

So the only thing I'd like to get form this thread is weather or not using the ARAP bin will give me anything to worry about in my '86 305.

i believe i have read that ARAP is for a vette with a 350 & auto trans, if it is it will have a lot of timing & some other things that you'll need to change.
you may want to check out APYS instead of ARAP.

as far as i know, you can switch over to $6E with no problems.

Re: Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

Yes, i read about switching to $6E from $32 or $32B, ok cool... but you then need a whole new bin. I'm very unsure and confused about what bin BCC to go with, and how to find out what bin was for what engine/car. Is there no direct listing to check? I noted down from other past posts, ABUT, APYS, ANZA, APYP, but these really mean nothing to me. Even a search really doesn't shead any light.

But when I get home I will try to find and open the APYS.

Thanks.

Re: Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

I cannot find this APYS. I am looking on Moates.net and also the diy-efi site. Nope.

The bins I find in the 6E folder at Moates.net are:

89vets 6E.bin
ACSV 6E.bin
AJUL 6E.bin
Apkd1374 6E.bin
Apyn3496 6E.bin
APYP 6E.bin
APYU3516 6E.bin
Arap 6E.bin
AUJL 6E.bin
AUJM 6E.bin
AUJN 6E.bin

Now I do not want a bin from a vette due to the high timing, like in the ARAP. My car already knocks with the stock bin (running quite lean).

I just need to figure out which bin is for a 89 305 (6E). I have a 86 305 that uses $32, and Id like to start my tuning experience with $6E, which bin is right for me to start on?

As always, thanks for any help..

Re: Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

i don't know why, but i thought you had a standard trans, which is what APYS is for.
go here, http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/
then just past half way down the page look on the left side for 89 TPI 305/A4 i believe its modified for an auto trans.

there are some other 6E bins here,
ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/pub/gmecm/bin_...%206E%2094/6E/
they aren't named for what they go to, but a search here in DIY-PROM may turn up what they are for.

also, when you move to 6E, unplug your cold start injector/valve.

Awsome, thats the site I ran across once and wanted to check it out in more detail, but lost the link.. so thanks for that too. I like the looks on the spark and such in that APYS bin, Im off to try it now, dont see anything about it that might give me trouble.

Ill do a search later, but do ya know off the top of your head whats wrong with leaving the cold stat inj. with 6E?

Anyway, much appreciated!

At a minimum, you will need to unplug your cold start injector harness. Otherwise you will get way too much fuel at startup. The cold start injector switch is not computer controlled. The 6E has it's own fuel enrichment.

Re: Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

Ill pull that CSI wire, Ill be sticking with $6E from now on.

One thing, and I searched with no luck,

Does anyone know much about the shifting constants/scalars in $6E? With that APYS bin, which had the Manual Tranny flag unchecked, my Automatic car shifts goofy. At high throtle and load its ok, and cruising at lowest loads its ok, but slight acceleration it shifts up, down, up, down, up, down... it doesnt know what to do haha.

there are scalars called, "Low Speed Limit For Low Gear Lock To Unlock Transition", low speed, high speed, low gear, high gear, lock to unlock, unlock to lock, all the combos... these are all set to 0 MPH. I suspect this may be the problem, but do they concern shifting or only the TCC?

I may start a new thread for this, unless its something that someone can toss me,

much appreciated

Re: Can I hurt my '86 305 with ARAP bin ($6E)?

no problem

the ECM doesn't control trans shifts points, only TCC.
on the the up & down part, is it a lot of RPM, or about 200~300 RPM change?
if it is in the 2~300 RPM range, that sounds like problems with the TCC settings.
i don't believe those setting should be 0 MPH.
try around 35 MPH for the Lock To Unlock Transitions, for the unlock to lock settings try around 38~40 MPH & see what happens.
