adapting ebl to usb port

Can I make an adapter for the ebl phone cable to go to a USB port?

I have reverted to using my wife craptop for a few weeks, and there is no rs-232 serial ports on it, just USB ports. Are all 4 wires used in the phone cable, or just 1 or two? Can't I make a cable to take the ebl data and run it to the wires for the usb cable to recieve the data?

Re: adapting ebl to usb port

Can get a USB-to-serial adapter cable. It just needs to be able to keep up with a sustained 57.6 KB transfer rate. The Keyspan 19HS seems to work well in most applications.

You can't connect directly to the USB port as the signals are different.

Re: adapting ebl to usb port

Kool, I already ordered a new PCMCIA card for my IBM craptop, to get a USB port again, it already has the serial. The wife wasn't happy about me using her laptop for my cars, lol

Re: adapting ebl to usb port

What about the other settings on the USB driver?(Device Manager - Ports - Com PortX - Port Settings I see above that you use 57.6KB. Default is 9600. Should we change this to 57.6K? The other options that you can configure are data bits, Parity, Stop Bits ans Flow Control. You can also click on Advanced where the default is use FIFO buffers.

I currently have hit or miss when using my work laptop and a usb adapter. It is weird since sometime it work great and other times I am closing WUD, unplugging the usb, plug back in, restart WUD, see the clock ticking, go to burn, fails, change comm port in WUD from 2 and back to 6 where the usb is configured, see clock move, burn, fail, large amount of swearing occurs, prom ID shows up incorrectly .........

After several attemps of the above and other thing, it will burn. Sometimes I can data log and sometimes it takes time to come alive.

Other than that, the car is running awesome. I am currenly getting the 5000 RPM open loop learns corrected. I am running out of road to test

Re: adapting ebl to usb port

USB driver settings depend upon the chip used in the cable. I've never found that that the COM settings for baud, start/stop, etc. need to be set. The WUD sets these when it opens the port.

When using a cable with the Prolific chip try messing with the FIFO buffer settings in the USB driver. Note that this chip set doesn't always work. Go to the USB driver and IIRC under the advanced button is sliders for the FIFO's. Try various settings.

If the cable has an FTDI chip then lower the latency setting to 10 or lower. Again it is in the USB driver properties dialog under the advanced button. I've had good luck with the latest FTDI chip, works on everything I've thrown at it.

Re: adapting ebl to usb port

Thanks for the fast reply. I am using the Port Authority USB Serial DB9, and which uses the Prolific. The manual says to try messing with the FIFO buffer settings or turning it off completely. If that does not work, .I am just going to fork up the $30 and get one from you.

I am getting a good result with messing the FIFO, decreasing the received but not the transmits for logging. The downloading is still horrible.
