well I've got my EBL Flash and I want to get started. What do I do first after I plug this thing in? What do I need to change to at least get the thing running? If I could atleast get it to run like stock for now and then start tweaking that would be ok. what do I do?

First thing to do after plugging it in is to check the data connection. Key-on, engine-off, fire up the WUD. Move the go-pedal and see if TPS% gauge moves with it. All OK? Good, go to the Flash display and try reading a bank out of the EBL Flash system. Works? Cool.
Can now set up a BIN to start off with. In the EBL_Information.html doc there is a list of items that should be checked/set in the BIN. Such as the Initial SA, BPC, re-limiters, and so on. If the CD has a BINs folder you can start with BIN EBL_F_0016.BIN. This is the closest to your current vehicle.
Otherwise you can start with the EBL_F_TB.BIN file. The SA may be a little high for LO3 heads but it is a good start.
Flash the BIN you checked/set into the EBL Flash system. Start a datalog, and a VE Learn session, turn the key & start the engine. Drive it around a bit (no flooring it!), get the engine up to temperature, then after about 10 minutes of driving pull over and check the VE Learn.
If Learn is OK, then stop it, and flash that BIN into the EBL Flash. Start new learn & datalog and continue.
Sorry but I'm a complete noob when it comes to tuning. As in reasonable, what are the first things to look for? Also, I don't have an EGR valve or a Charcoal canister. How do I turn those two things off in the EBL?
I dont have my RonEBL.bin here at office but I beleive you set the enable temp for EGR to a verry high number like 250 deg F. Also I believe there might be a spark adv table for EGR that you may wish to zero out. also there are some flags for MALF that you uncheck so there is no error code. With ther EBL I believe RBob gives you a help manual that may suggest some of the changes one needs to do day one.
I was looking at my BINs and I noticed that thereisn't anything for an 88 tbi camaro. So the EBL_F_0016.BIN should work ok? Also I think I might have made a mistake on how my laptop reads my BINs. I accidentally made it use the WORDPAD to be able to see them. How can I fix this and what program on my laptop should I use to read them?
The only .bin that work with EBL are EBL.bins. I believe when I did the EBL thing RBob only offerred one. That was specific for a 305 auto F Body. I needed to change it for 350 cid and manual trans. Now I see he offers more than one. I think the other is more aggressive spark table. Not sure if he offers several(Suburban, etc.)
Ok I got everything plugged in and now its saying "Cannot read Configuration File D:\EBL_WhatsUp.cfg" When I try to get it to VE learn and save a new BIN to create it's telling me that I don't have permission to access the file. or it says that cannot open COM port. But I was able to start the car and it ran, albeit like ****. However it did let me flash the "0016" BIN but thats primarily it. It won't even let me datalog.what am I doing wrong?

For a heavy vehicle, with 350, I just mimicked ASDU SA tables as a starting point. VE learns dialed in fueling and KS counts took care of areas were advance was too aggressive. As with any tuning going slow at the beginning is a norm. I still have couple areas were I get excessive KS counts, perhaps because it got too lean, but then again Cali gas is crappy to begin with.

When you started the datalog and the VE Learn there was a dialog box that asked what filename & path (folder) to place the new log/bin files. That is where they will be found.
For saving the files, don't really need to do that. Just stopping the data logging or the VE Learn will finish out the file and close it. Even closing the WUD program or shutting down Windows will cause them to be saved. It's fairly fool proof. Short of a Windows crash the files will be closed out and saved.
The only thing required after a VE Learn is to flash it into an EBL Flash bank for use.
One more question. Do I need tunerpro to tune with this? How do I use it in conjunction with the EBL?
Tuner Pro works, others use WinBIN. Short of the VE Learn all changes to the calibration are made via an editor. To use Tuner Pro (TP) start the TP program, then go to XDF (top menu) and select the EBL XDF file.
Then File->Open Bin for the BIN you want to change.
Left side of screen has the constants, flags & tables listed with the same titles as found in the EBL_Calibration.html doc.
Double click on one to open the editing window, make the required changes, then save. Then FIle->Save Bin. Don't forget to save the bin, easy to do.
Then with the WUD flash the newly updated BIN into a EBL Flash bank.
Note that using the PromID within the BIN lets you easily keep track of your BINs. That value is also displayed on the main WUD screens.
Well I have tunerproRT now and I'm abit clueless. what are the first things I should do with this? What should I change to the BIN first? I know I sound like a Noob but,e hey that's what I am when it comes to this tuning thing.

That is a good thing. I pur cart before horse and did the cam and heads b4 I learned to tune. It would appear your engine matchs up with EBL.bin so there may be little to change b4 first datalog. I would start with car in CL fully warmed and see what the VE Learn is doing at idle and then up the rpm range under no load(park). That learn will give you insight as to what future learns will provide. Then redo Learn while car in motion on level road on a easy cruise. You may see trend. Contine redo of Learns and try to capture all rpm/map cells as possible. You may need to lock in 1-2-3 gear to hit a learn at higher rpm w/o trans shifting. you have it easy with VELearn. Years back I needed to produce the .bin corrections with a datalog and manual correction/burn to .bin. Once BLM is in order then you can work on AE as that may need to be tweeked. Check out "free tune" thread in stickies.

Now can I do this with tunerproRT? In the EGR SA column so I just type in 0and save? And the enable temp, do I do that in the CTS column? What would I have to do in the max tps and DC% step size areas?
Also I don't have a charcoal canister or a VSS. what will I have to do in these areas?

In Tunerpro there is a table or constant that allows you to set EGR enable temp. I set mine to a high enable temp. I recall there is a spark advance table as well. Just look top to bottom in tables or constants for "EGR".
Max TPS? You found that for EGR? If so, nothing, as it was disabled with the coolant temp at 250. DC? Is that for EGR? if so I dont think you need to touch it as EGR disabled for high temp. Maybe same is true for EGR SA? Not sure. wont hurt to set to zero.
Ok I did that. I went to option word 4 bit 7- EGR because I did a search and found that if I unchecked the box the EBL won't even look for the EGR, it was already unchecked. also I set the EGR-enable CTS threshold temp to 151.25 C. and set the EGR- SA to 0. Is that all I need to do with that? Also about the CCP and VSS. what would I have to do to make sure that those aren't causing an issue do to the fact I don't have them? Do I have to set the CCP CTS enable threshold to its maxium to delete it?
CPP. I would agree set enable temp high. I think there is a bit to uncheck as well? Also unplug the line to TBI. Not sure if the line itself should be plugged. My line is unplugged currently. this is for VELearn only. Otherwise I believe it should be kept functional. My car does not have VSS so I cannot comment. I will guess set at 200 mph?

btt, I'm running into some of the same issues as robertfrank. I'm also looking to turn off my EGR, VSS, and IAT because I do not have them. How do I go about doing this. I can not find the specific tables/menus/etc in turnerpro.
It may (will!!) take a while to read, however, it is a treasure trove of information.
For the items in Tuner Pro they are basically grouped together. The first part of the item name specifies what area it is for. The full name matches up with the names in the EBL_Calibration.html document.
For the VSS and IAT, just un-set the malfunction codes for each. With no IAT the ECM will create a default value. Can change that to something reasonable and continue to use the IAT/CTS blend. Or, change the IAT/CTS blend to all 100% for CTS only.
The EGR is either real easy, or tricky. Depends upon whether the actual hardware is still in place. If not there such as on a pre-EGR vehicle, just leave it un-selected (Option Word 4).
If the hardware is present and need to disable it for tuning the VE tables. Then select it and set the CTS enable threshold to 150 C. AND, need to properly set the NC/NO solenoid option. Both in Option Word 4.
If the solenoid passes vacuum with no power it is an NO device. If the solenoid blocks vacuum with no power it is an NC device. Get this reversed and the EGR will be on when it should be off and vice-versa.

This is what gets lost in translation... I do not see or know how to find and locate the physical table or menu to do this action. How do un-set the mal code? Where do I find this?
Reasonable is also tough when I have no baseline to judge from?

When you open Tuner Pro there should be three windows on the left side. In these windows are listed the calibration parameters. If not, then click XDF (menu bar) and then Select XDF... Navigate to and select the EBL_V24.XDF file.
Then select the proper BIN file.
The left three windows from top to bottom is: individual values, flags, then tables of values.
If you are not sure which window it is in scroll through them. Then to open it for editing double click on that entry. Make the change and click save. Then File->Save Bin
Flags and such are either set or un-set. The values and tables can have new data typed in, or copy & pasted in.
hot dang... I had the wrong xdf file open!!!! this changes so much! I dont feel so lost anymore. I guess I need to play with this some more too to generate some more stupid questions. Cool. No problem about the email. Just take your time and try stuff out in Tuner Pro. Get the hang of making changes, how to flash and read back the calibrations, switching between the banks, and so on.
One question was about the VE Learn: once set up the VE Learn creates a BIN ready to be flashed and used. No need to make further changes based on the learning.
well, I ran my first series of learns tonight. I followed the instructions and blocked off the egr port and ccp port. Next, I went into the WUD and set the Maxium CTS to 150 in the preferences menu. Then I found the closest provided bin (8) and put it in tunerpro. I un-set the IAT's and that got rid of check engine light on the dash and the ses light in the wud. I did a couple 15min runs, a few shorter ones just idling around playing with rpm ranges. I tried to vary my driving to keep the green thing from turning yellow in the VE Learn table.
After tooling around I think I figured out how to create the bin and the flash it back into one of the banks. I could be full of sh*t but I honestly think it runs better. I did notice that the exhaust did pop on a hard decel in 2nd gear.
Anyway, things are starting to gel together... thanks.
In WUD program, under FILE drop menu you should see Datalog - click on it - a Select File box should open. You can name a file for your next data log session. I use a simple file convention that contains time and date of the test run. For example for normal drives it may be named something like this:
d1310-20080704
For idle data capture use:
i1435-20080704
You can use whatever you like - key is to avoid spaces.
File saved as xxxx.dat on the hard drive. After a test drive you can playback any previously recorded xxxx.dat files in WUD display - sorry there are no emulated engine sounds.
You can also export captured engine data into excel - Display - Analysis - select file to be dumped (I use single header check box). File dump - select file to be dumped into excel importable format. After that sky is the limit.
I've stumbled on the BPC vs.Vac section in the ebl calibration page. Do I need to 0 out that BPC table? I'm assuming that I my pretty much stock set up is not vacuum referenced? I believe the spring in the TB is what regulates the pressure? Or is there vacuum to control the pressure on the spring?

Leave it alone unless you have a vacuum referenced fuel pressure regulator. Basically BPC vs. vac section allows to compensate BPC for engine vacuum. As idle vacuum is high fuel pressure is low. At WOT manifold vacuum is low and you need all the fuel in world to feed that beast so as to prevent lean condition. Check documentation file - it should be there.
thanks, I figured as much but since I am new I like to re-assure myself and ask questions. I'm also getting a Malf code on the the FP relay and dont see anything in the BST colum. Anything I need to address there?
BST is used to indicate amount of positive boost in Turbo Applications. For FP relay malfunction take a look at the left most column, bottom of the display. There should be two voltages - one is should be just above the other ~ 13.8 Vdc at idle. If you have one missing you have bad harness connection on the switched side of the FP contact.

I finally cleared some time to try some serious tuning with my EBL Flash today and after only around 35 miles of ve learning its already running better than the stock calibration.
A few questions for you, on this car ('91 Caprice L03 wagon) there are solenoids controlling the EGR and CCP, when doing VE learns is it good enough just to turn these off with the options flags without actually disconnecting and plugging them?
I'm assuming if the solenoids are working correctly they'll keep them completely closed (and I guess if the leak a little that's what the engine is going to see anyway), is this correct?
One other thing, with the EGR and CCP option flags off during the tuning as expected the EGR led in the WUD never came on, but the CCP led was going on and off, is this expected?
One more question, after you have done a learn session and then stopped it and have re-flashed to an EBL bank, the VE learn display still has some values in it, is it necessary to clear those values before starting a new learn session?
For the EGR and CCP, if the hardware is present then the option flags should be enabled. This puts the hardware under ECM control. Otherwise the EGR output is N2O and the CCP output can be the shift light. The shift light can also be set up for a different output.
Then with the option flags enabled, disbale the EGR & CCP activity via the CTS Enable thresholds. Just set them high (150C does the trick).
Most important to physically check the CCP solenoid. It will be either NO or NC. Can use a vacuum pump on the line that goes to the TB, or try to blow through it. If the solenoid allows air to pass when the key is off (key-off, engine-off), then set the option for NO.
If air can't pass, then set the option for NC. I've seen both types of CCP solenoids used on the various GM vehicles.
