the right stuff

Hi folks

Is there a sticky in this forum that lists all the right stuff I will need in order to acquire data, make changes and get that changed data back into a form that my car can use.

I know nothing about tuning EFI and dont really want to know or learn....but I have no choice! I have not been able to drive my car for a year because I cant find anyone in my area that knows about tuning and who would be able to help me at least get my car running good enough to get it to a dyno where a professional could fine tune the damn thing.

I went with MAF EFI because I thought I could get away with the modifications I made to my engine with out having to get into the tuning stuff.

Seeing now I cant get the engine running worth anything I guess I was wrong.

I see that Moates has a lot of stuff but I dont know what exactly I need such as interface cables chip burning stuff who's editor to use and most importantly some instructions.

I have TPI unit from an 87 firebird 165ECM and a chip from a 350. I have the small adaptor board because I bought a chip that had the fan temps modified, 9th injector delete, vats disabled and rev limiter changed.

If you can help point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

thx

Jeff

A laptop and a cable is what you need to data log. This is where you should start. Cheap lap (rs232 serial 9 pin with win 98) $100, cable ( obd 1) $25 - 50

Data master and/or tunerpro for software.

This a door in, there are many more.

Re: the right stuff

My old compaq (PIII 600Mhz 192 Mo of RAM) is doing the job pretty well. It takes about 90sec to start but then it works fine. running tunerpro RT, ostrich and data logging. All work fine.

Re: the right stuff

To read data:
http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...roducts_id=127
This will allow you to use TunerPro RT or some equivalant program to log data from your cars ALDL port via USB. Your laptop should have a usb port if it came with windows. If not maybe get a PCMCIA usb adapter (moates sells those too)

Personally, I went the emulation path. Someone else will have to explain the stuff you need to burn chips.

Emulation:

http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...roducts_id=169
That's the emulator itself. It emulates whatever chip you upload to it. (I use a bin file which I downloaded from diy-efi

http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...products_id=41
lets you use the stock memcal, incase you have to use limp-home mode. (HIGHLY reccomended. Also this is a solderless method)

I got those three things, and I am able to change values realtime, as well as log the results.

Search, or wait for someone to explain what you need to burn/erase chips before you purchase something, decide which you would rather do. Personally I'm going the emulation route to get my settings down, THEN I'll burn a chip once I'm done modifying stuff.

yeah right! Who's ever "done" eh? haha

Re: the right stuff

Yeah I am still not sure which route to take. I guess I will have to keep reading. I would really like to get my car drivable but at the same time dont want to experience buyers remorse after making an un educated purchase.

Thanks for your input Malcom2073.
