I have a ebay purchased Willam PCB 5.0c and am using .98D8 software (but also tried several other versions). I can't get it to program or erase SST27SF512 chips. I have checked, double checked, re-checked the jumpers in several configurations, and tried some other configurations suggested throughout the foums. I wanted to see if anyone else had this specific board and had it working before I sprung for the BURN1.
I have it set to SST27SF512
VPP in 12V mode
Erase jumper added to the 2/3 pin location
1,2,4,6,10,11,12 OFF
3,5,7,8,9 ON
Chip is located all the way down with 2 rows of slots showing on the ZIF
USB is providing power, unit is plugged directly into the computer with no cable used.
Hardware test is ok
When pushing erase, i click checks on the 2/3PIN and DIP SW setting boxes, then it tries to erase up to 17-21% several times then fails out saying "Device Erase False". If I try and program the chip, I get a fail error as well. Anyone get this specific board to work?
Thanks,

Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
It looks like the same Willem PCB that I program my 27SF512 chips with.
USB only provides +5 volts. You need +12V to do the program and erase. I use a wal-wart power supply and a printer parallel cable to program the 27SF512 chips. Does your 5.0C PCB have a voltage converter to make the +5v into +12v to do the erase? It sounds like it doesn't and you need a power supply attached to the PCB.
EDIT: That is the exact same Willem PCB that I am using. Did it come with the printer port cable? You need a power supply to plug into the small black plug near the USB plug. You probably have one laying around from some other electronics you have. It needs to be a +9v to +12V supply.
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
I am using the Willem 3.5 software. My Willem came with two software versions and only one worked. I wonder if that is you problem and not the USB port generating power. Before you go and try the power supply, download version .97JA from here http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/stor...l_download.asp
After it is installed, click on the Willem 3.5 icon.
EDIT: Yeah, the more I think about it. The power isn't your problem. It is most likely the wrong software......try the software I post a link to.
"Software V 0.98D5 Support Hardware Willem EPROM Programmer PCB4.5C Only."...............and you have an older PCB.
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
Hey guys,
I have tried the .97ja software with no success. I am going to see about using an external 12v power supply to see if this helps. I will also try an a different PC. I am using a HP Thinclient running XPe. It has run everything else just fine, but I will try the combo on a "regular" PC as well. grumble grumble (they should make a mac version) grumble grumble
I have to run to practice tonight, so I will post a question up on the other forum to see if I can get some help.. I was just hoping someone here may have used it.
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
Here are the jumper settings for programming. The only change fore erase is the one jumper by the square sockets that the software tells you to install (J1). Do your jumper settings differ than the picture? The USB jumper on the lower right should differ.
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
Well, it still didn't work. I had my jumpers set a little different than you did, so I changed them over and tried to erase a chip. The erase bar came up, and didn't move, then failed. I did in using both .98D8 and .97ja using the STT27SF512 (Vpe12V) settings. I tried a couple chips with the same result. I must be missing something. (I did move the erase jumper into position, and tried it not in position for kicks...)
I had high hopes when I saw your post that I had the jumpers wrong, but man, this is frustrating. I am so close, but yet just can't do anything. I guess I will try and do a HW test on all the pins, but it was suppose to have been tested before it left the seller. I doubt that there is a hardware problem, I suspect it is user error on my part. :/

Any other ideas?
Is the green power LED on?
Does the red VPP led blip on when you click the erase button?
Does the amber program led and red VPP led come on when you try to program?
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
When I plug in the power and LPT port, power and VPP come on.
When I put in chip A, the VPP light goes out. (If I use chip B, the VPP light does not go out when it is installed)
When I hit erase (chip A), the program light comes on, power light is on, VPP is out, display bar does not show any %
When I hit erase (chip B), the program light comes on, power light is on, VPP light is on, and display now goes to about 50% several times, but never makes it to 100% then says Device Erase False.
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
Here are the steps for erasing/programming.
1) plug in USB or external power
2) plug in LPT port
3) run the 3.5 willem program
4) Insert chip into programmer socket
*** NEVER INSERT A CHIP INTO SOCKET BEFORE STEPS 1 - 3 ARE PERFORMED ***
Without the program running, the voltage can be somewhat unknown and could destroy a chip.
1) When erasing, the green power LED should be on. The red VPP led should blip on for less than a second and the go out. The amber program light should NOT be on during erase.
2) When programming, the green power LED should be on. The red VPP and amber program LEDs should be on.
Since you have the amber program light on during ERASE then it sounds like the jumper settings are wrong if you are using the .97ja program.
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
Hey I know this is an old thread but for others (like me) who are using the willem programmer, and found this thread through the board's search:
To make the 5.0 version willem (what can currently be found pretty cheap on eBay) work with the older software, you need to move the 2 jumpers at J4 over to select "3B"
I had to use the older software because I couldn't get the newest version to work in Vista/Windows 7, it kept giving me a "permission error"
I'm using .97g, to make it work in Vista/Win7 you have to set it to compatibility mode for win98/2k, run as administrator, copy the 2 included .dll files to C:\windows\system32, and in the software set it to "PCB3" mode
I'm using it with my laptop via a PCMCIA parallel port adapter
Re: Help with Willem PCB 5.0C before I get a BURN1
Hi, just following this post and I am encountering the same problems. I'm using XP Pro w SP3, added the parallel port driver, and the registry fix. I got .98d9 with my card, it states it's a PCB5.0, I haven't seen any photos of it yet though, it says 2009-BIOS on the board (Green) and the two square sockets are staggered a bit, the top one right next to the ZIF socket with the other a bit to the right. What I get is when I do a read, it comes back with the READ OK, but when you try a COMPARE, it fails immediately within the first two lines, sometimes at the first bit, not consistant. I've tried installing .97ja as well, with the same problems. I've been lloking for the documentation for the switch and jumper settings, and have found some that appear to be about the same but nothing for this board. A very frustrating situation at best, I'd sure appreciate it if anyone has this board functioning, it sounds about like the same problems as in these other posts. I haven't tried to burn any chips yet, I can't even get them to verify!
Thanks
