short story version : 92 firebird 730 ecm
cars sits 1 1/2 years / i loan my chip to a friend / i change laptops
i change exhaust , port more on intake & install 30 lb injectors
i lost old bin and the chip was changed for other application
i can't get ECM to see chip ,starts and runs but i "assume" in limp
because no changes i make in program effect the way it runs and
SES light is always on .
i am starting with this bin http://www.moates.net/files/1)%20Sto.../AUJP%208D.BIN
i am using this xdf http://www.moates.net/files/3)%20Bin...0Motors/8D.xdf
I took the original lower VE table x .73 and then approximately
20% less at < 70 map for the cam i run
changed to 30 on inj constant
changed to 784 on engine volume
vats off
the chip notch faces away from the handle
what the hell is going on !!!! i have tried the super .xdf same thing
tried new ecm same thing . won't start with no chip in socket
starts with chip but always SES light and no matter what i do in
VE tables - idle speed tables - timing tables no changes physically
to car . if i can get control of the ECM i can do the rest by emulating
realitively quickly ..someone tell me what i have forgotten in the last 1 1/2 year

The notch in the chip faces toward the outside of the ECM. Not knowing which way the ZIF is installed this is the only way to describe the chip installation.
Note that if the chip was installed backwards is may no longer be any good.
Always look for the SES blink at key-on, engine-off. SES turns on briefly, blinks off, then comes on solid. With the blink the ECM is running from the PROM. No blink, no good.
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
turn key from off to run engine light comes on then blinks
off once then back on
turn key to start engine runs a few seconds then SES light
comes on stays on
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
if you stick that chip in just once the wrong way and turn that key..its toast. I learned that the hard way...3 or 4 times ha.
Mine did the same thing i would accidentally put it in the wrong way and turn the key and then realize and flip it around and the chip was garbage after that.
However when i was tuning my maf 88 iroc, the ecm just died suddenly after a chip swap...got stuck in limp mode. Bought a new ecm and problem solved

Check the malfunction codes to see what the ECM doesn't like. All it takes is an unplugged sensor to do what you are seeing. Most likely (99.9%) isn't limp mode, but a default mode for a bad sensor.
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
i finally got connected to the ALDL
it shows no value for prom ID amd
a whole bunch of other stuff http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...r/untitled.jpg

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
up date : i am never able to access withthe autoprom
even after the program says i am connected.
i boroorwed a snap on scanner and it shows the
values but the engine temp sensor is at -39c
so i am going to change the sensor .
any ideas on using the auto prom?
i have the switches on the back of the autoprom
set in position 2 in my diagram. i set the baud to 160.
and it shows connected but there no data displayed
any ideas
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
To use the AP as just a logging cable,
The switch 1 should be away from the cable connection (outward)
To use it as an emulator, the switch going inboard (twards the connector)
Switch 2 sets if you want to have a resistance on the diagnostic "jumper"
You want it in the center (not jumpered) to log data.
Putting it into jumpered position will flash out any codes on the SES.
For a 730 running $8D you should be using 8192 baud rate.
Download the $8D "ADS file, I didn't see where you loaded that.
The XDF is for editing parameters in the bin file.
The ADS is the definition for datalogging.
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
there are 2 .ads files i have tried
1227730.ads & 1227730_8d.ads
there is a box in the edit aldl datastream definition screen
where you have the option of placing a check mark in a box
for 160 baud . if i do not check that box it will not show
connected to the ecm .
latest update : changed ecm temp sending unit and now
the snap on scanner shows the correct temp but i now
noticed it shows 6375 rpm as soon as it starts and never
changes . so now i have to figure out what's up with that .
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
Check that your data cable has pins E & M connected together.
Some cars use "E", and some cars used "M" for data.
Most cables have this but not all of them.
Re: can't get off limp mode & trying to race tonight
latest update:
i took the ignition module to O'rielly's auto parts
and had it as well as a new spare module i had tested .
the one that was in the car failed on "reference pip"
i checked my new spare module and it passed ..
i installed the new ignition module in the car and now
it has no SES light and the scanner shows no trouble codes
but wait , the scanner still shows engine speed at 6375
all the time ... any ideas ?
i can't do any tuning until i can get the ECM to see different
rpm ranges
