Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

Yes, the USB ports are part of the com ports, or will be assigned as such with items like the Ostrich and ALDL cables.

To find what devices are connected to what com port open the control panel, go to system, click on the hardware tab, and open device manager, then scroll down toe "Ports (Com and LPT)". In here it will show the currently active and connected ports. and what is connected to them. It won't likle say "Ostrich" but IIRC says something allong the lines of "FTDI device", sorry my Ostrich isn't near me to give you an exact phrase. I don't know what will be indicated from the AKM cable though, as I don't have one.

So that's:

START > Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > Ports

Once you open the control panel, you may want to switch it to "classic view", there will be a line that says such. I find "classic view" easier to use.

Once you know the port that the datalogging cable is connected to, you can set that port in Tuner Pro.

In Tuner Pro:

Tool > Preferences > ALDL/Emulation

One other big thing is that you need a correct ADS file, which it sounds liek you are familar with opening in TP RT, so I won't go into detail there.

Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

ok ill mess with the com ports and try to figure that part out today!

"you need a correct ADS file" whats the ADS file?
all i know is this...i open tunerpro. open the right xdf.8d for 730ecm. plug the ostrich cord into the usb and the other end into the ostrich and it beebs and turns green stating that hardwear is found. I can start the truck and click Emulation and it also turns green sayin im now emulating. but when i try to hookup the obd1/usb cord nothin happens or changes and i cant figure out how to datalog.
im new to this and with no one by my side to show me how its done im runnin blind and just using the trial and error method haha

Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

The ads file is what deciphers the datastream coming through the ALDL connector.

It doesn't matter if the ports are set perfectly, without that ads file, your not going to datalog anything, since TP RT won't know what to look for.

The ads file is different for each code mask and some masks even have more than one data stream.

Look in teh stickies and use the search on here to determine which one is the correct one.

Sometimes looking through the moates.net file manager might have a file labled as something you recognize as matching your code mask and ECM.

Getting something like this set up the first time is the hardest, then after that it's easy because it's always the same process, just the files will change for other vehicles.

Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

ok i got to the com port place and plugged in the aldl/usb cord and it pops up as "USB serial port(com6)" i pulled it out and put it in the other usb and its the same but "(com5)" so now that i know what the ports are i went to tunerpro and set the ALDL/usb to "com6".

whats next?
still i lil lost on the ads file.....how do i findout what my code mask is?

edit- i found out what a code mask is and i have the right one already. xdf.$8d for the "730" 90-92 camaro ecm.
now just need to know what the "ads" file is and how to find the right one?

Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

for the defination files you need, go here,
http://www.moates.net/info_pages.php?pages_id=14
when you click on the link on that page, it will ask you for the user name and pass word.
User = moatesuser
Password = moatespassword

on the next page, look for,
4) Datastream Definitions
then look for,
FIRST THRID GEN 1227730.ads
thats the ADS file i use.

there is another one here,
http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadBinDefs.htm

USB "Thumb" drive would be the best way.

you can either save the files you need to the hard drive of your desktop and then move them to the USB drive or save them right to the USB drive.
then plug the USB drive into your laptop and move them from the USB to the laptop.

Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

You will need to browse to the location you saved the ads file on the laptop.

If you saved it on the desktop, then you have to "browse to the desktop" in that window, then open the file from there.

I recommend creating a folder set up specifically for turning, that has seperate folders within, for .bins, .xdfs, .ads files, and any other information.

Re: windows XP, tunerpro rt, ostrich, USB-ALDL cable. Need help gettin them runnin!

The Com port selection could be just about any port number, won't be 1 (that's usually for bonified serial ports). You need to go into your device manager and see what port is assigned to the cable. You can plug in the cable with the device manger open and the Com Ports tab expanded, to see what new com port pops up, if there are a few already shown. The device manager will automatically update as it sees new devices or they are removed.

Use that com port number in Tuner Pro RT. Test for the cable, but without it connected to the car, just the ALDL cable plugged into the laptop. You should get a "Cable found and functioning" pop up, once the cable is seen by TP RT. Load your .ads file, turn on the ignition of the car and connect.

Yes, you will need the ignition on for TP RT, to datalog or connect to the ECM.

most of us have had to ask things like this, so don't sweat it.

in TunerPro, go to Tools, then Preferences.
select the ALDL/Emulation tab. below the "Test For Valid Cable" button and the "Interface Type" box, you should see the com port number box.

ok i checked it and its set for the right com port. i plugged in the aldl cable and hit the "test for valid cable" and i get "cable not found or not functioning (tested at 8192 boud)" does the cable have to be plugged into the aldl port with the key on in order for this test to work?

No, don't have the cable plugged into the ALDL port.

Do you have the type set for "Standard Serial"?

Native serial ports will usually show up as Com port 1, so set that as the com port in TP RT, and test for the cable to verify.
