The adapter bypasses the stock PROM, but the circuit board on the memcal is still used. It contains some basic functions such as limp mode, and I think ESC control on 90-92. Also, I'm almost positive that it needs to be the correct memcal - for example, on a 90-92 TPI ECM, you'd need a 90-92 TPI memcal, etc.
