Has anyone determined how to correlate IR thermo gun vs manifold mounted EGT probe measurements? Also cast iron manifolds vs header temps and where the best location to aim the laser on the manifold/header tube. And lastly what temp ranges to tune for? Yes I did search first! Thanks All

I would like to know as well. I posted before to see if someone new how to interpret what I was seeing with an IR gun since I had some header primaries at 300 and a few at 700. At least a test procedure like hold the car at 2k and measure. I would think any useful info would have to come with the motor under load.

My experience with IR guns is that they are too sensitive to the emissivity of the target. They are OK for a sanity check. But fall short when an actual temperature reading is required. IOW, when looking for a dead cylinder they work great.

Also note the upper temperature range. Once the exhaust manifolds are close to glowing the IR gun has reached it's upper limit.

The IR thermometer I have has a range of -58 to 1000deg F.
I thought that this would be good for an aid to idle tuning.
I have stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and would like to know where to aim the gun and what the "ideal" temp range should read.
I have read anywhere from 400 to 650 deg F at (190deg H2O temp) while at idle. I have a 383 with LPE 74216 213/219 dur @.050 .462/.470 lift cam, First Fuel tpi intake system, $8D 122727 ECM. All in a 5500lb 4x4 truck. Basically a 5500lb 4x4 vette.
