Re: ARAP best starting point?

I would try it, but rework the timing table alittle. Its really aggressive. Works ok with most aluminum heads but with irons and your high compresion, i'd really back it down.

Max timing in that bin is limited to 41.8 degrees i think, the table has values up to 48 in some spots. So rework the table. I'd start with 30 deg total timing at WOT and slowly ramp down as rpms go down. Then in the cruise spots i'd smooth the table out and limit advance to the mid 30's for now as a start. Keep idle around 24-26 deg for that setup. With that smaller cam and high compression on iron heads, it may be very picky on timing. Be conservative with good fuel in the tank.

Working on a 230/236 cammed AFR 190 head 360" motor now that works very well on the stock ARAP settings for cruise idle and part throttle. WOT ran actually very rich so working on leaning it out. Car doesnt run what I thought it would but still far from finished.

Recall that the max timing and max retard (min timing) are distributor limits. With the typical TPI base timing of 6* BTDC it is possible to have up to 48* BTDC at the crank. And a minimum of 2.5* BTDC minimum at the crank.

And what Orr said about ARAP spark timing being aggressive.

Re: ARAP best starting point?

True, from the last discussion on that I should have mentioned that its a distributor limit. From the datalogs you will only see 41.8 but based on how the bin code works, I guess its possible to see more than that at the crank.
