Have my ISA set to 5* or (4.9* in TunerPro) and this works well. Wondering if bumping up my ISA at the dizzy (and of course also in TunerPro) to something like 10* advanced would make the thing start up faster. It does windmill, though not much.

i run 12° at the dizzy, also set in the .bin...helps my engine to have a nicer, more defined startup...

no, didnt give me any issues...

setup is 415ci, single plane efi, 236/240 cam, $8D on `727 ECM...as i am a bit down on dynamic comp when cranking, it works very well for me..

Probably 10-12 degrees is the most youd want to run for base advance. Too much and you run the risk of having the starter hit the eject button. This all depends on the dynamic compression, of course. If its stock, probably best to err on the lower side, maybe 6-8 degrees or so.

Another more subtle point is that more base advance lessens the distance between the rotor and the terminal when the coil fires, which helps performance since the distributor gap primarily controls the breakdown voltage needed for a spark. Earlier firing means less latency. I have mine set at 25 degrees of base advance, but I have a late model SFI distributor which works a bit different.

I picked up this trick out of a carb tuning manual:

Get the engine up to operating temperature and set timing to a known good setting (say 6* BTDC). Advance the distributor 2* and turn the engine off. If you watch your datalog or temp gauge you will see after a few minutes the temp will spike. Now try and start the car. If it still starts easy, then advance another 2* and repeat the process until the car hard starts or windmills and back up 2*. Now your initial timing is set.

I set mine to 10* initial and it starts really well. I did notice this summer on a really hot day it sounds like sometimes it kicks back on the starter when I let off the key. My car also needs to be tuned, so that could have something to do with it.

My new setup wanted nothing to do with 6-8 degrees of base timing. It wouldn't even run when setting it that low. Smoothed out at 14. So that's what I set it at, and also set it for 14 in the prom. Hot starts crank slowly. Maybe I should set it at 10-12 even though it runs like crap? I'm sure when I re-connect the EST and put the new base timing in the chip it would idle ok?

Do you unplug the est bypass normally to start the vehicle? Obviously plug it back in to see how it will operate in a normal starting condition...

I just unplug it when setting the timing. When I get to 10-12 the rpms drop and it wants to die. So I set it at 14 where it idled fine (with esc unplugged) This weekend I'm gonna try and set it at 10-12 if possible and see how it runs with the esc reconnected.

Wow, thanks to everybody who has jumped in on this discussion. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from the experience and knowledge of others.

My setup is not stock, but far from anything wild. I built this little TBI-350 nearly 8ish years, and 100k +++++ miles ago.

I think I'll be upping my ISA to something a little more agressive after reading the replies here.
