What Gear Am I In? FWD? RVS? NEUT? DUH??
Hey Everyone...
Since I have owned my TA since the 11th grade, I undoubtedly figured out without looking, what gear I am in. The only problem is, that the gear indicator "light," "green thing," whatever it is, isnt there. I thought its supposed to be, since that is actually what shows you what gear its in. I just think i need that lit up somehow. Anyone know a fix for this? Thanx.

Did you pull up the console top and look to see if the bulb is in there? Or if it's just burned out?
What happened on my T/A is the bulb socket and the wires on the bottom of the bulb picked up a little oxidation, 600 grit emory paper can solve that. Otherwise, I think that socket takes a 194 bulb or a 168 if you want it bright.

Ok...
Well, I pulled the thing apart today, and the bulb thats in there works...it lights up the gears when i put the parking lamps on. But the gear indicator, the little green thing that lets you know what gear you are in, does not work, and i did not find a bulb or anything that i would/could do to replace that. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't think that thing is actually supposed to illuminate, but if you can get it out of the shift bezel and paint it a color that contrasts against the red/amber/whatever's in there, then it may be easier to see.
I had an '86 for about a month, I could never see the dumb indicator, either. My idea was to fabricate a strip of plastic with a square hole cut in it that would slide across the underside of the bezel, illuminating only the gear in use according to the shifter position; I never got around to it.
Now I have an '84 and I don't have to worry because there's no moving indicator!!

EightT..
Thanks for the advice. I looked up the replacement part for that entire panel...the shift indicator, the window switches...the whole 9 from one of the restoration catalogs...i think it sells for like 400 bucks or so, but for that car, the aftermarket restoration piece actually has the indicator notches to the right of the gear's. Neat. But i dont feel like spending 400 if the one i have is in good condtion. Your idea sounds good. I will try it out. Thankx again
