Fan relay mystery.

The fan relay near the air intake box is all silly. Every once in a while, my fans will shut off and I will have to fiddle with the relay to get it back on. This is happening alot lately, so I wen under the hood to see what's up. Turns out that every time I move the relay, it makes a click and the fans shut off. When I move it back into position, they turn back on. I had to find a position in which the relay would work and then secure it there with electrical tape. Now it won't budge and it has been ok so far. Why the hell would a relay do that? Thanks.

I have posted a lot about this, here is the short version. The fan relays suffered from an inherent design problem. Basically the contact armature overheated and warped from the current causing the contacts to become misaligned. The relay contacts then overheat causing failure of the relay or very intermittent operation. It can also overheat the female connectors in the socket causing similiar problems. GMSPO and NAPA now stock a redesigned relay that is far more reliable. NAPA part # AR-279, 14089936 for GM. Some large chain stores still carry a repackaged version of the old unit, don't use them. Believe it or not the new one says "made in China". Don't forget if you ever get stuck that you can also use the heater blower motor relay in place of the fan relay.

Is that part for 88 and up applications? Because I looked for the part and it says 88 and up. Would you happen to have the part number for the redesigned part for 85-87? Thanks.
