90 Camaro Tachometer

Well, i posted this question on the body and interior board and not much came back! Maybe somebody will catch it here!

My 90 camaro's tach pegs when you turn the key on! but when you disconnect the battery the tach goes back to 0
-Could it be not grounded some where?
-How does the tach work?
-Could the eletronics in the coil be messed up? maybe a new coil would make the tack work?

thanks guys any help would be appericated!
Ivon
