best/easiest way to tap into ignition?

I’m in the process of installing a remote start/keyless entry system in the car

I have everything all laid out. I know where everything is supposed to go. I even got my homegrown vats bypass relay system working. All was going well with the install until I got to splicing into the ignition harness. Up to this point I have been using wire taps to splice into the wires, that way if I ever want to remove the system all the stock wiring will be untouched aside from a less than 1mm wide gap in the insulation. I bought the biggest wiretap I could find (10 gauge) and it refused to work with the ignition wire(s). They’re just too big for it (6-8 gauge is my guess).

I have two questions:

- Where is the best place to tap into the ignition harness? I’m doing it where it’s visible above the steering column. Is there a more accessible place?

- Does anyone know a place that sells a lower gauge (6-8) wiretap so that I won’t have to mangle my stock harness? I tried the local hardware store (Ace) as well as Home Depot. The best Ace had was 14-16 and Home Depot had 10. I doubt Radio Shack would have something like this.

If I'm not mistaken, the fuse panel you are working with has all sorts of empty slots in it that can be used to draw switched power in.

These should make messing with the stock harness itself unnecessary.
