I have a 1991 Camaro RS with a V6 3.1. It's been running fine and all of a sudden it started getting hot when I stopped and idled (road construction, railroad crossings, etc). Turned out the cooling fan was not coming on. I tested the fan, replaced the coolant temp sensor and was replacing the fan relay. I plugged the new Cooling Fan Relay into middle of the three locations on the driver side of the firewall as indicated by the Haynes manual, but I guess someone moved these relays around at some point in the life of the car because it was my Fuel Pump Relay in that position, but I didn't know this at the time.
I tried to start the car and it just cranks and cranks.. no start. I get out and put the original relay back in and get the same.. crank but no start.
After some wire color matching I realize the fuel pump relay is the relay I was messing with so I assume I am not getting fuel. I tried looking in the manual for a way to test the pump, it says I can energize the fuel pump by applying battery voltage to the 'G' location in the ALDL, but obviously not on my car because there is no connection in that location.
I have looked for a fuse in the fuse box under the dash, but there is none labeled fuel pump. I pulled every fuse one at a time and all are good.
So.. I have a few questions..
Is there a fuse, inline fuse or fusable link for the 1991 Camaro RS 3.1? If so, where?
What is the differences between the three relays on the drivers side firewall (fuel pump relay, cooling fan relay, and the A/C relay for the A/C I don't have :P )? Are they interchangable or did I short something out when I plugged the cooling fan relay into the fuel pump relay plug?
If there a way on the 1991 Camaro RS 3.1 to bypass the relay, fuses, etc. to energize the fuel pump to test the pump?
It was a fuse. After a bit more looking I found the fuse I was looking for, but it wasn't a fusible link, it was in inline fuse mounted on top the passenger fender right in front of the coolant overflow jug.
I figure I would post what it was so others with similar issues can find this post.
