gm#88961867 distributor problem....help

I have purchased a distributor (#88961867) for my new 350 vortec engine (gm#12486041), and am wondering if anyone else who has this same distributor and engine replaced the gear that came with the unit for #10456413 melonized gear? Should I use the gear that came on the distributor (hopefully won't cause any damage) because the melonized gear looks the same but does not even have the metal tooth that engadges with the oil pump shaft.

Thanks for you help

The "tooth" that engages the oil pump is an extension on the dist. shaft itself. Take off the old gear and you'll see it. The gear has to match up with the camshaft material. Some roller cams are hardened steel and require the hard gear. Older cams used a softer gear. A mismatched gear will not last long. Some aftermarket camshafts have a pressed on standard gear that works with the softer gears in older dists.
