Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
Has anyone considered rewinding the motors with smaller wire and more windings. It would be a pretty labor intensive job, but properly done the power output of the motor could easily be increased. its basically the same theory used to create the magnetic fields that allow different size alternator outputs. Basically by using smaller stranded wire and running extra turns the resistance is reduce threreby increasing amperage allowing the motor to run faster and with more power. however doing a mod like this I dont think is a mod for the beginner and would take time and patience. The entire circuit would need to be upgraded to handle the higher current, and either you would want to upgrade the brush's or be prepared to have them wear out a bit faster and need replacement. But the way I see it, if you can rewire an electric motor properly then brush replacement is nothing.

Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
One of these days I'm going to try running more voltage through them by using probably a transformer. I'm thinking 18-24 Volts.
I was watching Mythbusters on the discovery channel a couple weeks back and they had "high voltage" running through their window motors and they worked. They had 300 lbs on top of the window holding it down also. They didn't say what "high voltage" was. If higher voltage means higher speed, I'll try more than 24, like as much as I can without the motors burning up.
Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
Where does "turbo" come into play? .... I put new window motors in my car and they are as quik or quiker then that. Probably quiker I've never timed them though but the certainly look quiker. Take that coil looking spring out and I bet they will be lightning quik like my 82 vettes windows only downfall is when you lower them you think the glass is going to break.
Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
I just used "turbo" just because they were really fast at free speed.
This mod or idea needs more refinement, I never had the chance to work on this mod due to trying to get my car moveable again. (Trans install) A transformer would work but a variable votage converter would be ideal. I have seen these for around $100. I dunno if i wanna take the plunge and fork out $100 for something that may or may not increase the speed.
Hey Firebat, did you ever try the motors with the car running? I know your battery wasn't at it's optimum charge and the charging system puts out 13.5 volts aprox. So that may be the difference there.
I wish I was able to work on this problem right now but I have loads of work to do on the car in other more important areas. Right now I just have two functioning window motors, later I'll look at modding them further.
Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
Yeah, got it running with the car running, but I'm using 4th gen window wiring. I just ordered (10) 30A/40A relays so I'll be doing the relay mod hopefully in the next month, while I'm wiring other stuff up.
Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
Were those videos bofore or after the mod?
mine are just a little bit slower than that but they make that same bogging sound when they get to the same spot...
Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
Firebats videos were after with the car not running on a non fully charged battery, I used a 14.4v battery pack from my drill to test the mod and i got a much faster motor, but I have been at other stuff with the car to even get at it again.
I'm half tempted to have the window motors run off a 16v car battery rather independant of the car's, but i think i'll figure something out soon.
Even wiring heavier gauge wires to the brush holder housing makes a big difference in that the connection is alot better than the crappy stock connectors to the motor. This is where you get corrosion, dirt, and loose connection, mine is permanet to the housings but you could use a bullet-type crimp connector to attach the wires to the stock wiring of the car and remove the window motor stock electrical connectors. Just a thought.
Re: turbo window motors!! I found out how to make them real fast!
Has anyone experimented with a different motor? Maybe one that was made for a much heavier application like the rear window on a blazer for example. I don't even know if it is possible. Just a thought.
