OK,my car won't crank now.I just replaced the complete int. harness from a 91 ta to eliminate my hackjob converting the 89 digital dash to analog gauge setup.Everything worked perfectly fine prior to the swap, and now the car won't crank.
When I turn the key to the run pos. the fuel pump kicks on for about 5 seconds, the warning buzzer does the same and when the buzzer stops buzzing the ses light goes out.WTF is that all about?
I am certain its not a vats prob. because I had vats deleted in the memcal when I originally did the speed density tpi swap. Anyone got any idea what it could be??
everything is 91 wiring from the headlights to the taillights
and the body styling as well.
so you replaced the engine harness as well. I put a 1991 harness in my 82 trans am .... even though u bypassed vats in the prom vats still has control over the cranking circuit. so if you didn't use your old vats decoder box that is probably why!

the decoder box hasn't been in the car for almost a year.
Also,my car has a column from an 88 so there is no key pellet.
but the 91 harness should have the vats starter enable relay intact still right? .... Therefor if you have a 91 harness in the car but no vats key resistance being read no decoder box ... you need to bypass the starter enable relay. thats probably what the problem is.

my friend,you may be correct!
I do remember the rlay was missing on the 89 interior harn. and the green and yellow wires were cut from the relay term. and connected together with a butt-connector,and the 91 harn. def. has the relay still plugged in and intact.
Do I just need to do the same thing as the 89 harn.?
I don't understand why there was no security light though,or why the fuel pump operates.I thought that vats kept the fuel pump from kicking on as well as cranking.

because fuel pump is controlled by ecm. You bypassed vats control there, thats why it's working ... however vats decoder box sends signal to the vats starter enable relay and energizes it so thats why on the 89 harness those two wires were joined together to completely bypass vats security feature.
I know in 91 the starter enable relay is not in the kick panel like a 89 though it kinda by the fuse box.
security light probably not working because the vats decoder box isnt plugged in or vats fuse is missing is all.

You are right in that you will need to just butt connect the wires together. The reason there no security light and the fuel pump works is because you do not have Vats. whats stopping you is a starter disable relay for the Vats and not the system itself. The computer is not actually looking for the Vats signals for the fuel pump and spark so its giving you those fine, but the relay that disables the starter is looking for that resistance signal and thus keeping your car from cranking!
I hope I explained that well enough...

WOW! IT LIVES AGAIN!!
To think I spent half the day searching for my specific problem, totally ignoring anything vats related because I (JUST KNEW) that wasn't my problem. lol!
Anyone need a starter enable relay?I got one up for grabs, yep free!
Better act fast though because my 20 lb. sledgehammer is within arms reach!
