berlinetta wiper control issue

the wipers on my 85 camaro berlinetta will turn on but not off, i can choose between high and low speed, intermittent/mist dont work, and as far as i can see the motor and all wires relating to the motor are alright. my electronics skills go only as far as basic switches, the whole circuit board thing is way over my head. anybody run into a similar problem? also the heater controls (the same panel) only partially work, but the heater doesnt work anyway so im not concerned about them. any help would be appreciated

Re: berlinetta wiper control issue

The Wiper system bug might be in the pod and it might be inside the wiper motor cover. I don't have a quick an easy way to figure out which part it is - I just plug stuff into a working system to see if it works right !

Over the years the Berlinetta control pod buttons become used / abused so much that the usualy do not work as well as they did when they were new. These parts hold VERY close tollerances and just a little wear or over-use causes them to work "less than prefect" The Blinker lever and the Wiper Off buttons are the 2 most common issues with the Berlinetta dash set-up after all these years.

When your wipers are working and you want to shut them shut them off,....... Put them on HIGH speed and then push hard and wiggle your thumb on the MIST/OFF button. Once contact is made ( inside the pod ) the wipers will slow to normal speed before shutting off. Sometimes the button needs to be pushed *just right* in order for them to work. As far as the wiper motor; the "PARK" switch goes bad in them causing them to not return tothe off position

Heater problems are also difficult to diagnos because there are 3 relays working behind the dash in addition to the Blower motor / Resistors in the engine bay as well as the Pod controling the system. If you post a detailed description of the heater issues than we might be able to guide you to the right area , but you would need to do a LOT of wire probing or get the parts tested in order to figure out exactly where the problem is.

like john said, a lot of the time you need to wiggle the button extremely hard and hit it just right. A lot of the time that fixed my issues in the past. Otherwise it gets a lot harder from there. Otherwise trace all wires and then go through the step by step with John (getting pix by the way).

Re: berlinetta wiper control issue

i think the previous owner (complete idiot by the way) has already exhausted the wiggle technique... next plan is to pull it apart and check if theres an obvious problem. as for the heater im not too concerned, the heater core leaked anyway so theres no flow to it, but it didnt work before either. i suspect its probably the same control issue, being on the same board and all, but im more concerned about the wipers. thanks guys i'll post how it goes.

sure enough, the contact for the mist/off button is worn pretty much to nothing. not sure how to test the rest, but it's the only one showing obvious signs

Re: berlinetta wiper control issue

ok, so i've got the button itself working now, i can tell because when the wipers are at high-speed and you push mist/off, they slow down and try to "park" but they just keep going. i saw briefly in another thread something about a "park pin" i think it was called. anybody else run into this?

Double tapping the mist/off button seems to work ok for me. I have to do it a couple times usually, but the wipers stop!
