Fuel pump relay bypass

I need some info in how to wire up a fuel pump directly to 12v source, What I need to do is get the fuel pump power, I plan on doing this with a on off switch and the 12v power coming from the fuse panel, But I need to know how to access the power wire coming from the fuel pump.

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

I don't have the wiring code for your year of car, but if someone can
provide that info, I can draw up a diagram for you.

The bypass is actually quite simple. Once you located the relay,
just disconnect the harness from the fuel pump side.

You will then mate the 12 volt wire to your fused panel switch. Also
ground the circuit as it is isolated.

Do you still plan to use the fuel gauge on the dash?

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

The Fuel Gauge works, so your saying if I can get you wiring diagrams for an 88 you can make me a diagram? that would be great. I just need to find the Fuel pump power wire then all hopefully in business the rest should be easy.

Well see if anything on here helps http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

Try this setup. From the diagram, it seems like it will work fine. The fuel
sender doesn't appear to be linked into this bundle of wires.

Cut the Tan/White wire after the common tie point so that you are only
controlling the fuel pump with your switch. Leave enough length on the
cut side in case you ever want to mate the wires back to stock.

If the 3rd gen is the same as the 4th gen, the relay is located behind the
driver's side kick panel (near the hood release lever).

I would suggest connecting the switch to a source which is dead when
you remove the key (switched power) in case you forget to flip the power.

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

Just out of curiosity, can the stock FP relay not be made to work with the LT1? I wouldn't think anything would be different, except maybe the oil pressure cutoff switch.

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

I was wondering the same thing. You didn't say why you wanted to bypass the FP relay so I didn't question your intent. But I rewired one 3rdgen for an LS1 engine and we got the FP relay hooked up to the new computer no problem. Or did you just want full control over the FP circuit?

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

You should also put in a fuel pressure cutoff switch incase of a crash. Holley makes one that cuts off the fuel when oil pressure drops below a certain point. I know you will have a switch, but what if you're unconcious.

Re: Fuel pump relay bypass

the red wire to the "fuel pump prime". where does that go? the previous owner of my car put speaker wire from the red wire on the relay to wherever the destination goes, and that came off, and now the car doesn't start. so where does that go?

On a Vette anyway ,that is just to a connector that lets you run 12V direct to the pump bypassing the relay for prime or test purposes
