car wont start, thinking its the neutral safety switch

i changed my spark plugs today on my 1985 Camaro with a 305, and the only way for me to reach 6 and 8 was to unhook some wires on the starter, two wires on one bolt. i disconnected the battery before i did this. changed the plugs and tightened everything back up. i drove the car off the ramps, let it sit there while i put the ramps up. the car died while i was backing out of the drive. i let her roll to the end of the drive. started her back up in neutral(no reason, just didnt want to shift into park) drove around came home shut it off. i go out to take another drive and she wont start. i think oh the battery must be low or something. so i try jumping it, still nothing. it clicks when i turn the key but the engine doesnt turn over. so i try adjusting the neutral safety switch and still the just clicking.

this sound like the neutral safety switch to you? the battery is almost brand new and its not dead because the volt gauge is at just below 13. lights are bright and everything.

now that i think about i'm going to put the charger on it for a hour or so and try it again.

It's not the neutral safety switch. Check the connections that you messed with on the starter.

if that doesn't work tap the starter a couple times, you could have made a bad spot on it.

go up under the car from the right side behind the front wheel, its metal and its under the headers, just use the handle end of a hammer and tap around until you find it.

I agree that it is the starter, not the shifter switch. If the starter clicks, it's getting electricity so the shifter switch must be good.

Try "clicking" it several times, even 10x or 20x, it should crank eventually. If it still doesn't, the starter might need some attention.

Re: car wont start, thinking its the neutral safety switch

when i posted this it would make a clicking sound when i turn the key. now however it just makes a single click when i turn the key like it would when the battery is low.

its been too wet to get under the car to knock on the starter though.

Its your starter bro! The only thing for you to do is take it out and take it to a auto store and have them test it for you.

More likely to be bad starter connections than the starter itself.

Re: car wont start, thinking its the neutral safety switch

I know this is an old thread, but i need to comment anyway. My car has had this same single click issue for over a year. Even with my brand new starter! It will eventually start after like 10 times or so. LOL. Sometimes it starts on the first try , i just never can tell. Maybe bad starter wires? maybe that small purple wire from the starter to the neutral safety switch? Someone please let me know.
