headlights keep turning off on the road

ive had this problem almost every time that i take my 87 iroc out. it usually happens around an hour after i leave but has started to happen in less time. ill be driving and the headlights flicker a couple times then shut off completely and i have to pull over. after i pull over for a couple minutes with the lights off i turn them back on and they work again. also the high beams only light up the headlights brighter the two lights in the middle do nothing. i just wanted to know if anyone knows what might be wrong. i have the chilton book and a knack for taking things apart but a little help in locating the problem always helps. if anyone can help please reply

Re: headlights keep turning off on the road

Go buy yourself a new switch. The headlamp switch has a built in relay to protect it from an overcurrent situation, when the relay begins to fail they begin to flash.
