I swapped a V6 for a V8 in my '83 camaro. The tach worked before with the V6 but I cannot get the tach to work with the V8. I believe the wire is white for the gauge but will a V6 tach work in a V8? Any suggestions are appreciated.
V-6 and V-8 tachs are different as far as I know. I just replied to your temp gauge problem and if your having problems with your gauges, I would make sure that you have power going to your cluster. Does anything on the cluster work, lights, fuel gauge, volt gauge, turn signals, anything?
Sorry it has been months since I was on here last...no time to work on the car The other gauges work so i don't know what the issue is. I have heard that a v6 tach might not work in a v8 so I might have to turn to that next. Thanks and sorry for the late reply.
you know if its possible to wire in a capacitor os something to bring the numbers down? i just bought a v6 tach cause the redline was 1000 higher, before i read about this. would really like the higher number tach, any suggestions?
I think I saw a thread where someone did that a while ago, you would have to search. It was just the "theory" behind it though, no one ever posted any results.
--What I did for a tach was take a 4" tachometer: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/VDO-333160/
and then made a simple bracket out of abs plastic to mount it in the original location.
There is less than 1/8" of "gap", it blends in well and doesn't look out of place at all.
(I only used an aftermarket one because I originally had a V6 and swapped to a 355, and stock tachs are notoriously inaccurate)
I've done it on my tach in my truck, you dont just add a resistor in line, u have to take apart the tach, find a compasitor on the board, remove it and replace it with a different one. Anything you add to the line will make it worse, its off cause the one in there is already to high so adding more would be a step in the wrong direction.
I'll try to find the link for how to do it, give me a minute.
Edit: this is the link, its not specifically for F-bodys as you'll see but hopefully it will give you an idea of what needs to be done.
