86 Camero w/ 327 TPI will not run with EST/Bypass wire DISCONNECTED

While searching the forum I found posts related to the vehicle not running when the EST wire is connected but in this case it's when the bypass wire is DISCONNECTED the car instantly dies and will not go into base timing. If you try to start the car with the est disconnected it pops and bucks the starter hard and it's particuarly friendly to the teeth on my starter. I assume it has something to do with the ignition module not switching over when power to the bypass is removed -- when testing the pins on the ECM I think it's B3 for grnd and D4 for EST (trying to remember) with the key on I get less than 500 ohms of resistance then when I disconnect the 4 pin connecter for the distributor I get an open circut so it doesn't appear the EST wire is shorting to ground. Can anyone enlighten me on this subject ? Thanks in advance ^_^

Oh I almost forgot to mention it doesn't run worth of damm either even when you get it running with the wire connected. It misses and the rpm varies constantly, you can also smell that it is not getting a good burn.
