Anybody ever converted their Pontiac H3 bulb fog lights to HID bulbs? I did a quick search & there certainly are kits out there, but I question the value, same as headlight HID kits. $100+ for the kits vs $40 for Silverstar headlights or H3 bulbs. Are HIDs REALLY worth 3 times the cost of halogens?

You can find HID's for less than $100, they're out there for under $70 to your door. They do throw out a lot more light, but for a fog light I would try to get either 3000k or 4300k color because a white/blue color will cause more glare in fog/rain/snow. No but I've got a pair of used Sylvania Xenarc X1010 HID driving/fog light headlamp assemblies, bulbs, ballasts, cables, harness, remote, and receiver that I may try to install when I take my bumper cover off for a repaint.

They are expensive but how much is it worth to avoid totaling our cars because we didn't see that deer/elk/horse/cow/whatever in time to avoid it?

Nice, but is that comparing halogen low beams to HID high beams?

I have Silverstars & the difference between highs & lows is like that too.

i had a m5 that had them stock and it was amazing. i upgraded them to the 50w system and i was blown away. that car had projectors though. on my r1, it had halogen projectors and when i put a hid kit in it, the effect was very dramatic. almost too much. youd get used to seeing very well, and then youd go into a corner and your eyes wouldnt adjust in time. i see lots of cars with hid conversions with regular lenses and its super bright, but not as focused as the projector. with my m5 i changed bulbs once in 4 years, with my bronco, i change my ultrastars about every 6 months. the replacement hid bulbs were $50 for a pair of d2s's, and when i used to get my bulbs at kragen, a pair of 9007's were $40.

Make sure you double check the HID kit. If it is a TRUE HID kit it will come with 2 bulbs, 2 ballast, and wires with the conectors on them. You will usually take the ballast and plug the stock wiring into it. Then you should have 2 more wires coming off of the ballast which will connect to the HID bulb. And yes it is worth it. The HID lights are so much brighter. Make sure you go through the temperature chart and decide what color light you want. You can go to Sylvania's website and go through their temp chart and decide what color you want. Let me know if you need more help with your quest. P.S. Look at EBAY....

I have to say that anyone who has driven with a true HID setup can speak volumes about their superior light output. My T/A has HID lows in projectors right now and H3 fogs also in projectors (thread w/pics is in the fab section somewhere). Totally worth a little extra money:

HID lows? The Hi & Low are in the same headlight for 'birds.

I been wanting to do this to my fog lights as well but on my maro. I currently have ome yellow one's but I want to replace the bulb for a true yellow instead of the fil they use in it.

Yeah, I ran two projectors in each headlight, one for the lows and one for the highs in my original setup. I'm currently on revision 3.0 and have projector low, reflector highs, and projector fogs.

P.S. color is not an issue. While I'll agree that 4300K ~ 6000K are about the best range for color and performance, yellow lights make no difference in rain/fog/snow, etc. Water particles are large enough that it makes no difference what the color wavelength is, that's an old wive's tale.

That side by side I did was low beam halogen to low beam HID. The housings kinda suck for HID's unless you have or get projector style stuff, because excess light gets thrown upwards making it look like high beams. I got mine from an ebay company that goes by something like HIDoutdoorEquipments. I'd just make sure to get a set from a company that sells a ton of them and/or offers a warranty, for that just in case scenario.
