Keep Blowing A Fuse

Hello All,
I just finished pulling my instrument cluster out and pulled but did not replace (just a hole now) the bulb in back of the temp guage. Now every time I try and replace the ACC 20 Amp fuse at the fuse box I hear a sizzle then it immediately blows. Could that be the issue or does it matter? The previous owner said every time he tried to use the cigarette lighter it would blow the fuse. So I finally tried plugging my radar detector in and sure enough that's when the fuse blew and I think that's when the problem started. Should I try leaving the lighter connection behind the dash panel unplugged? Any advice would be appreciated.

You can buy a new lighter socket from any auto parts store and wire it in fairly easily. Alot of time the sockets become loose and short out over time. Even a more common problem is crap in the lighter socket itself. (parts of plugs, coins, etc.)

Re: Keep Blowing A Fuse

So I disconnected the plug for the lighter. No more fuse blowing. Now how do I remove the original lighter cylinder?

Re: Keep Blowing A Fuse

Hello,I have the same problem with one of my fuses. The fuse is the Gage fuse. I have removed the gage cluster and used continuity meter. The fuse blows out even with the Gage cluster removed. Ihave read my firebird manual the I purchased from autozone but cant find any help. None of my gages work, obviously! The day it went out I was just sitting the vehicle while it was running but parked, I then put in drive and started to drive when the buzzer under the dash started to go off. the fuse was replaced and it worked for a day. the n the buzzer started to sound. Ever since then the fuse blows the second you turn the igniton key on, not even to start the engine. Please help someone. this is my frist time on a forum.

Fuses popping like that meens you have a short to ground somewhere in the line . Trace the wires and seeif anyting is cracked , broken , or disconnected and touching a ground sorce . Also check the condition of the wires coming from all your sensors to the gauges and the connections at the gauges .

You're lucky i caught this thread, I went through hell figuring mine out so i know this little bastard and everything its connected to. There are a lot of things on this circuit. First pop the hood and disconnect your egr solenoid, that's usually main guy that caues it to blow. If thats good unplug everything related to cruise control one at a time. Mine kept blowing b.c the switch in the column was shorting, but you can remove your tilt lever and take off that little access panel and unplug the cruise switch from the main harness. Thats what cured mine. Some a/c stuff is on the circuit along with the smog stuff. Check all those wires make sure none of them are shorting. If you want to rule out the engine bay all together, go by the driver side kick panel, and youll see a black plastic cover covering the bulk head of wires going into the engine bay, snip the pink/black wire, if you pop the fuse in and it its fine, its something in the engine bay, if it still pops its something in the cabin and you might need to yank the dash to find it.
