fuel pump wiring

i tried searching and couldnt find anything, the previous owner rigged the fuel pump in my 88 iroc, the wire from the fuel pump is running to a purple wire under the drivers side dash, and is some how mixed up with the blinkers, my blinkers dont work, they just stay solid, i replaced the flasher for the turn signals and that fixed the blinkers but now the fuel pump doesnt come on, when i turn on the right blinker i here the fuel pump come on and off going along with the blinker, so i put the old flasher back in and now the pump works like normal, but now my blinkers dont work, i would love nothing more than to beat the hell out of the guy who rigged all this crap.. or just simply ask him how it all was before, so i could work on fixing the original problem

basically i want to rewire this all the way was originally, and im wondering if anyone can get me a wiring diagram for the fuel pump

thanks

Re: fuel pump wiring

nevermind, i did some searching around, i found out that since the previous owner converted it to carb, that i have to run a switched 12v source to the fuel pump relay or the ecm will shut the pump off after a few seconds, but for some reason the previous owner is running the fuel pump off of a purple wire under the drivers side dash, looks like its coming out of the fuse box, havent looked at it real close, so im not sure

there is an orange wire that looks like its supposed to go to the battery, and when i hook it to the battery i hear the fuel pump kick on even when the key is off, i pulled both relays in the back right corner under the hood next the the brake cylinder, i disconnected them, and the pump still kicked on when i touched the orange wire to the battery, so the pump isnt even running through the relays at all, oh another thing, when i hook up the the orange wire to the battery, the buzzer thing on the inside of the car goes off, like i switched the key on

the turn signal flasher is bad, so all my blinkers stay solid when i switch them on so i have to flash them by just turning the switch on and off with my hand, i bought a new flasher and put it in, i turned on the car, but this time, i didnt hear my fuel pump come on like i usually did, and all my blinkers worked, but when i turned on my right blinker my voltage would drop a lot in sync with the blinker, and the fuel pump would turn on and off in sync with the blinker too, my left blinker worked just fine, so someway the fuel pump is running off of the blinker system

im asking since this thing is carbed, what should i do with the fuel pump so my blinkers work and the fuel pump work.. id rather not have one or the other, lol

could i just simply run the wire from the fuel pump to the relay then run a 12v source to the green/white wire from the ecm? would that be safe to try?, also since this thing is carbed, would there even be a purpose for the ecm anyways? did i just waste all this time typing this up just to answer my own question? lol

thanks again

-steve

Re: fuel pump wiring

Correct, you don't need an ECM to run a carburetor. If the ECM was still in there, it should have been left connected to the fuel pump relay so that it runs as expected.

I would not recommend running the fuel pump through a manual switch, it is very unsafe. Instead, you can leave it connected to the FPOP (Fuel Pump/Oil Pressure) switch in the block which turns the fuel pump on when the engine builds up oil pressure. So if you crank long enough, the fuel pump will kick in and the car will start.

However, since you have a carb, if it's any good, it should keep fuel in the bowl(s). That way, when you crank it over, it should fire up immediately and when the oil pressure builds up, the fuel pump will kick in and replenish the fuel in the bowl.

But if your carb doesn't hold fuel in the bowls, I would recommend adding a PUSH button (NOT a toggle switch) in the cockpit that would allow you to activate the pump momentarily to prime the carb bowls. I would tie that momentary switch to an ignition switched wire (pink).

Hope that helps.
Lou

P.S.: Wouldn't you just want to shoot previous owners?

Re: fuel pump wiring

why is it unsafe to have it on a switch? i wired mine up that way the other day... because it was easier than hooking up a relay...

if you give me some valid reasons i may go back and change it.

i've switched mine from a 305 tbi to a 355 carb... and took the ecm out.

For safety reasons, you want to have the fuel pump running only with the engine running. If you for example got into trouble, let's say you're racing at the drag strip, you blow the engine, the intake ruptures and takes out a fuel line, a fire breaks out under the hood, flames shooting all over the front of the car but now you have fuel continuously spewing onto the hot engine, making the fire worse every second ... and it won't stop unless you flip the switch. It would be definitely safer to have the fuel pump running only with the engine turning.
Maybe not the best example. Let's try this one: a lady runs a stop sign and you hit her hard. You're unconscious, engine's dead, fuel line ruptured but the fuel pump is still running. There's nobody who can flip the switch to the Off position. I really wouldn't want you burning in your car alive.

Btw, if you use a push button, there's no need for an extra relay. Many push buttons can take the current draw of the fuel pump (up to 10 amps), especially the low pressure fuel pumps for carbs. Also, you can reuse the fuel pump relay under the hood and prime it on the green/white wire (with a 12V signal).

Hope this helps.

Re: fuel pump wiring

sorry for the double post, i have 2 pictures here, i cant find the fpop, but i know its not wired through it now, because the wire running from the pump is spliced directly into the blinker wiring, so i need to find this switch and connect it, could anyone tell me where it is? i might not even have one with all the hacking thats been done

from what ive read, its either by the oil filter, or on the top of the block somewhere, ive looked for it but cant find it

oh and just out of curiosity, shouldnt there be a cover over the bottom of the transmission, over the gear? you can see it in the first picture
thought id ask

Re: fuel pump wiring

The FPOP is the capped thing just above the oil filter in the first picture. Funny thing, I thought the pre-90 blocks had the switch on the back top of the block, right by your oil pressure sending unit.

Yes, your flexplate and TC should definitely be covered to prevent dirt/water/salt from getting in. It's just a piece of plastic, I'm sure you can find one at a scrap yard or maybe even here in the classifieds section.

Re: fuel pump wiring

Yup, there should be at least 2 wires coming straight out of the sensor (i.e. to the side). There should be also a connector there. Well, maybe that's not your FPOP, maybe it's just a biga** plug.

Try looking at the back top of the block, right by your oil pressure sending unit.

Re: fuel pump wiring

this wouldnt be it would it? it only has one wire coming out, im guess this is the sender, so the fpop should be around it somewhere, i cant seem to find it, might not be looking deep enough

another question, what are all these plugs all over the block, is this left over from the injection system?

this one is behind the carb, by the distributer

and these are on the front, by the theremostat

Re: fuel pump wiring

It should be in the first picture but I don't see it either. What you see is the oil pressure sender for your dash gauge. The FPOP is usually teed into the plumbing fitting. Or it's above the oil filter but obviously this one isn't.

You can easily buy the FPOP at any car parts store (they aren't cheap, I believe they're over $30) and install it above the oil filter but you'd need the right connector. Hopefully you can find it here on TGO or maybe at a local scrap yard.

Re: fuel pump wiring

well since i cant seem to find it, what would be a good switched source to it? until i get the money for a new fpop, or can get to a upullit for one

i think i found the connector for it, its got 2 wires coming out of it, tan/white, and orange

is this it?

This is the exact connector we're looking for. It's for the FPOP. Good find!! Talk about a needle in a haystack, this thing really WAS in a haystack!

If the device threaded into the hole above the oil filter isn't the real FPOP (it's missing the connector, maybe broken off?), it would be great to get one and thread it in. It is a very useful device.

Re: fuel pump wiring

alright cool, i figured that was it, still havent got to a upullit, but i did wire the fuel pump to the orange wire going to the relay, and its been working for about a week now, got another question though

my ses light is on all the time, ive never seen it off, i know it probably needs a tuneup, but since its carbed, wouldnt that be the cause of why its always on?
