Turn Signal and Hazzard Problems (Long)

My cars hazzards and turn signals are all screwed up. Here are the problems that I am having.

Head Lights OFF
Turn Signals: Drivers side all work good.

Passenger side lights flash in front and back but not the side marker on pass side. And while they are flashing, the brake and liscense plate lights along with the drivers side parking lamp and side marker flash with them.

Hazzards: All lights flash (front, back, liscense) except for side markers.

Head Lights ON
Turn Signals: Drivers side work good.

All of passenger side (except side marker) light up but don't flash. (Drivers side marker is on)

Hazzards: All flash except for side markers

What could be my problem? The wiper switch? Wiring?

Re: Turn Signal and Hazzard Problems (Long)

From reading your symptoms twice, I can give you a very PRELIMINARY diagnosis (which might not be 100% right) that it's a either a multiple tail light socket short or tail light wiring harness short. I would rule out the turn signal switch.

However, I would need more input to give you a more definite answer.
A few questions:
1) Is this a new problem? What happened just prior to this? Any modifications at that time? Or did you just buy the car?
2) When you say "all lights flash", does it include brake lights and tails? More specificity would help me a lot, if possible.

Get back to me, please, I am very intrigued by this one.

Re: Turn Signal and Hazzard Problems (Long)

Ok, 1. My turn signals have never worked correctly since I've had the car. I don't think it happened from something that I did. However, this car has had all sorts of problems since I have had it so ANYTHING is possible.
2. When I said all lights flash for the hazzards (lights off) I meant that the front parking lamps, the two turn signals in the tail lights, and the liscense plate lights are flashing. When the lights for the hazzards are on, nothing flashes, but the front parking lamps are lit up along with the turn signals in the tail lights.

Important question: when the license plate lights flash, do the red tail lights flash as well?

Yes, the red brake lights flash when the liscense plate lights are flashing.

A few more questions:
1) with the hazards on, does the third brake light flash?
2) with the hazards on, when you depress the brake, does the flashing stop and everything's lit?
3) with only park lamps on, are any turn signals lit?

Re: Turn Signal and Hazzard Problems (Long)

1. My car didn't come with a 3rd brake light (1985).
2. When the hazzards are on and I step on the brake, the hazzards still flash along with the liscense plate lights, but the brake lights don't flash, they just stay lit up.
3. When only the park lights are on, the drivers side, side marker is lit up.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Re: Turn Signal and Hazzard Problems (Long)

I wish I could actually touch your car and try to troubleshoot it in person, it's a very interesting problem.
Partially since I believe it has more than a single cause which makes it harder to troubleshoot across distance.

At this point, I really believe that you have a bad ground or bulb socket.
I'd recommend removing each lightbulb in the front, one by one. I'd start on the problem side, the right. Once you pull a bulb, test the turn signals with and without parklamps and if things get closer to normal, you found the offending bulb/socket.

And since your brake lights are involved, I'd also look at the tail sockets afterwards.

A very interesting problem, I am curious what you find.

Re: Turn Signal and Hazzard Problems (Long)

Well after going over some stuff, I got everything working right now, except for the side marker lights, neither of them come on for anything. Thanks again for the suggestions.

It could be just a burnt out light bulb in the passenger side marker, not uncommon.

Glad you got it working!
