I need the right Wiring Schematics for the Starter. Here is what I have and don't think this is right.
Wire # 1 From Positive Battery to Starter
Wire # 2 From Starter to Alternator
Wire # 3 A purple wire from some were coming from firewall to Starter.
this is very small, possibly the ground wire. Its the smallest of all wires.
Wire # 4 From somewere coming from firewall to Starter.
Purple is coming from the ignition switch, and thats the one who activates the starter when turning the key. Its not the ground, its positive (+) for engaging the starter.
I would be very grateful for a wiring schematic for starter to alternator, to battery, which purple wire goes to ignition/ do I tap into, to complete this circuit? (previous owner totally butchered wires here!...wrong colors, wrong schematic design...he tried installing push button start..no button, just a mess ...please assist, thanx.
Look here, lots of diagrams. If you scroll down to the bottom, there are '84 and '86 diagram links, they will be probably more suitable than the generic diagrams at the top of the page. http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19
Hope this helps.
Lou

Appreciate it BigBadLou,... I had just finished wiring up the whole kit and capudle last night ( I just need to hook up 4 leads and try it out,... but now I can double check every thing before proceeding.

Hey there!.. almost,... I rewired the whole damn thing, new wires everywhere, and re-did the distributer, purple ignition wire was wrapped up under 1/2 roll electrical tape, and jammed up into the 6" long metal heat shield tube behind engine against the firewall! Some outer plastic wire protectors were totally melted,... that's what happens when you try to hook up a racecar style start button starter, WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW JACK!! Tomorrow I take off starter, replace bendix, and try to crank it over. It turned over 2 repetitions, almost started, then just click.. click.. clicked. I wired it up "jimmy rigged" style, for testing purposes, but all connections seem solid so?..hope the car goes tomorrow, it just makes the project seem more fun when you are happy with even a little hope/ accomplishment.
So on the starter o would connect cable from battery to large bolt on starter, I got 2 other wires which will go where on starter? , then I got the fourth wire which is the ground. So my question is the other two wires go where on the starter?

Helps to mention what year / engine you have when asking Q's
As stated above
The reds go on the same terminal as the cable from the battery, the purple goes on the S terminal.
There are no grounds at starter
Alright guys, need to wire my battery, starter and 1-wire alternator up.
1989 TBI LO3
Positive battery cable to starter
Positive one-wire alternator wire to battery positive lead
Purple wire to starter (same spot as pos. battery cable)
Alternator wire to starter (Is this needed with 1 wire alternators)
Negative battery cable to passenger frame rail/engine block/k-member (Which or all or doesn't matter, mine was bolted to the front intake bolts, car had no starting problems).
Negative Battery Cable to passenger frame rail
1- Passenger head to firewall
1- Driver head to firewall
1- Passenger rear intake bolt to passenger frame rail
1- Driver rear intake bolt to driver frame rail
1- Block to transmission
1- Transmission to either frame rails or transmission crossmember
1- K-Member to passenger frame rail or passenger side of radiator crossmember
1- K-Member to driver frame rail or driver side of radiator crossmember
Also MSD says their 160AMP alternator has a range of wire sizes needed depending on length. Ill be getting a 0g wire for this since it will be routing through my harness around the passenger strut tower and to the battery, about 10ft of wire.
I believe this will be a good grounding setup, nice and even on both sides for some aesthetically pleasing reasons. Let me know on placements, as I'm sure it really doesn't matter to much, just having a few grounds is good.
There are also a few fusible links (1 or 2) near my battery area, I believe these were all grounded to the front of the battery tray. I will ground these again.
Any other wires go to the starter? I have just the positive battery cable and purple wire going to it now (possibly the alternaotr wire but I believe this sint needed anymore). Anything else since autozone and austin diagrams show nothing on the starter wiring and what goes to it.
