door lock relay bad or what?

ok try to follow me here

ive had my car for 3 yrs and the door locks never worked right. not enough that i could use them.

both sides would move a little towards lokc or unlock but never finish.

i did some reading online. i drilled a new hole in the chassis just above the old hole for the relay ground bolt.

as soon as i did this my passenger side works like new. locks and unlocks beautifully.

but my driver side hasn't changed

so now....

driver side still doesnt fully lock or unlock

passenger side works.

but also.....

the passenger lock switch barely works. i even replaced teh switch itself. no change.

i connected the bare wires manually and teh same effect.

this led me to the idea the passenger relay is going bad. ive seen both relays all the wires seem be snug fit on their connectors.

if i use the driver switch the passenger locks work great back n forth.

i havent removed the driver side door panel yet. i think it jsut needs to be cleaned and lubed. but my main concern is the passenger switch

lock barely works if i hold down hard. and unlock not at all.

even with bare wires touching

i called around i can only get the door lock relay at the dealership. what kind of crap is that?

any ideas am i on the right trrack or what else could it be?

Re: door lock relay bad or what?

Did you try the simple thing as cleaning the lock slides with WD40???? It is very common for them to gum up and not slide freely. Give it a try before tearing the whole door apart.

Re: door lock relay bad or what?

i had other things to do with my doors so tearing them apart was going to happen anyway. my power mirror was loose and i had to remove everything to get to the bolts to tighten.

but.... don't you think its weird that my passenger lock works with my driver switch and not my passenger switch?

Actually No....One side could be gummed up worse then the other. But if you want to spend money on swithes go ahead. I suggested a method that worked for a lot of people that had the same problem including myself.

Re: door lock relay bad or what?

sorry but im just not following.

forget about my driverside locks working or not.

lets concentrate on the operation of my passenger side.

and i didnt spend money on a new switch i had spare parts lying around

my passenger door locks only work with my driver side switch

if i use the passenger switch, lock hardly moves and unlock not at all.

so what is gummed up? how can my passenger side work great with the driver switch but sooo poor on the passenger switch buttons? and remember i get the same result if i touch the bare wires together.

sooooooo this is leading me to thing the passenger relay is bad.

anyone?

and if you say gummed up then tell me where and explain because im sorry but im just not seeing what could be gummed up here. most likely my driver side locks are gummed i agree but my passenger works only with the opposite side switch?

Re: door lock relay bad or what?

I think I'm following your problem but have a couple of questions.

1. Do you actually have 2 power lock relays? I added all the power options to my car and the factory harness only had one relay attached to it.

2. Have you tried unplugging the switch from the drivers side and plugging it into the passenger side to see if it works the same or if it works like it should? If it works like it should, you just need a new switch.

If swapping the switches doesn't change anything, I'd say you probably have breaks inside the wiring running from the passenger switch to the relay (this usually happens inside the wiring looms that run from the door to the body).

As far as the Drivers side door lock, Yes you should first try lubing everything up with white lithium spray grease (lube EVERYTHING...all over and in the latch and even the hinged piece that pushes/pulls the lock) but if that doesn't fix it you probably need a new lock motor for that side.

Hope this helps!

Re: door lock relay bad or what?

thanks for your input.

i went as far as cutting off the switch on the passneger side and jsut connected the bare wires. nothing changed. lock barely works and unlock not at all.

and as far as relays.

i saw 2 relays behind the kickpanel. and the wire colors seem to match for each door.

i drilled a new hole and rebolted for a better ground.

this made my passenger lock work. but not my driver side. i think i just need to lube it all up.

so i mean i can try re-wiring the passneger door becuase a break in the line is possible. but i wana replace the relay before doing all that.

following what's going on? haha

Re: door lock relay bad or what?

everything is fixed guys.

3 things fixed my locks.

1. drilled a fresh hole and bolted a new ground. - brought back my passenger lock.

2. lubricated driver side (did both anyway) and instantly brought back my driverside

3. the passenger side switch was bad. had a spare lying around and bam back from the dead.

not a relay problem.

thanks guys
