90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

Here is the situation i'm stuck with..

my 89 camaro threw a driveshaft at about 110 on the interstate and messed up some things so i decided to put the motor in my 90 and make it my daily driver.

after swapping the motor over i found out that the key i have for my 90 is not the one with the vats resistor in it so i went to the dealer to have one made and their compuiter didnt have the code for what resistor it needs. i tried using the key i have (the brass one with the cut stamped in it) and it gave me nothing but a unlocked stering wheel and dash lights.

so i installed a inline fuel pump and ran it to a switch and also did a push button start hoping to get it running but it seems as if the injectors are not firing off.

Ii'm assuming this is the vats dissabling the computer so i was curious if i could switch the ignition switch, the vats module, and the computer out of the 89 into it and it work or if there is a easier way as i have no way of finding out what resistor i need.

you need to swap over the vats components so the 89 computer will allow the engine to crank. the vats system on the older cars would only kill the starter though. An aesy way to bypass the system is measure the resistance of the chip and by a generic resistor and wire it inline removing the lock cylinder from the equation.

Re: 90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

yeah i cant measure the resistance as i posted because there isnt a resistor in the key i have and the dealerships computer has already dumped the info on it. all they could tell me was the cut, not the vats resistor number. but yeah i was talking about swapping the computer, vats module, and ignition switch over to try and make it think it was the 89 since it worked and i have the key for it

oh and the engine is getting fire because it tries to run if you feed it fuel manually through the tbi

Re: 90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

If your 89 had VATS in it and still have the key and VATS module. Then measure the resistant on the 89 key. Get a key made for the 90 with the resistant of the 89 and plug the VATS module from the 89 into the 90. Since the VATS module in the 89 is programmed to the resistant in the 89 key.

Hopes this help, if not confuse you.

Re: 90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

ok so once i do that then i could use the ecm that was originally in the 90 and just have to swap out the vats module and not the ignition switch or anything else correct?

what part of indiana you from? i'm actually doing all this in underwood indiana (inbetween scottsburg and henryville; aka exit 19 and 29 on i-65)

Re: 90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

I live in Elwood that's near Anderson and Noblesville.

VATS the resistant is burnt into the VATS module. Since you know what the value of resistant is for the 89, you could do what I previously or you could put the VATS module from the 89 into the 90. Then get some resistors or a thermistor of equal value of the 89 VATS pellet in the key and wire it into the wires going to the ign. cylinder. On my Cadillac I did this to, there were 2 thin white wires inside orange insulation under the steering column. This is probably the same in the F-bodies as it is in the Cadillacs. If you go this route, you can use the key that you already have for the 90, but you're VATS would be by-passed so it will make your car easier to steal like the old cars.

Here's more about what I'm talking about

ok so i got the vats module out of the 89 but it isnt in the same place on the 90. any idea where they would have moved it to?

Re: 90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

I have no idea where it is on any third gens. I've only did it on my Cadillac.

Another thing I've heard is taking VATS out of the computer chip, but you have to get a chip burnt to do that.

The resistors are $1 a piece - there's only 15 possibilities - a search on the internet for VATS will yield the list of values. Why not save the headache, buy 1 of each resistor, and plug them in one by one until you get the one that works?

Re: 90 camaro, engine swap and no crank with key

Ya, he could do that. I was just trying to make it easier on him by using the 89 VATS module since he knows the resistant/key number for it.

Here are the VATS numbers and resistants that were in a link I posted earlier.

VATS # K OHMS
1———— 0.402 (acceptable range .386-.438)
2———— 0.523 (acceptable range .502-.564)
3———— 0.681 (acceptable range .650-.728)
4————-0.887(acceptable range .850-.942)
5————-1.130 (acceptable range 1.085-1.195)
6————-1.470(acceptable range 1.411-1.549)
7————-1.870(acceptable range 1.795-1.965)
8————-2.370(acceptable range 2.275-2.485)
9————-3.010 (acceptable range 2.890-3.150)
10————3.740(acceptable range 3.590-3.910)
11————4.750(acceptable range 4.560-4.960)
12————6.040(acceptable range 5.798-6.302)

yeah i went to radioshack and bought a bunch of resistors in a pack and made them work.. finally got it working and it started right up.
