no turn signals

today my turn signals stopped working. originally both worked but only one bulb in my cluster worked since the other burnt out i guess. anyways now both of my turns signals dont work. and the hazards dont work either. so my question is where do i start in searching whats wrong? im sure the bulbs are good. which leave me perhaps a relay? (i dont know if it has one or not) or the turn signal switch its self.

and help or tips is appreciated

Re: no turn signals

When you say both the turn signals and the hazard signals don't work, what happens.

If you turn on the hazard switch do the exterior light turn on an not flash?

For the turn signals, when you signal a left turn, do the front and rear left turn lights turn on and not flash? Same question for the right turn signal.

Both the turn signals and the hazard signals have separate flashers. If the light turn on for the test above and don't flash then the associated flasher is bad and needs to be replaced. If the light don't even turn on then you likely have a wiring problem.

The turn signals are powered from the Turn B/U fuse, which is hot when the ignition is in Run Bulb Test(Acc?) or Start.

The hazard flashers are powered from the Stop Haz fuse which is hot all the time. You might want to check both fuses also.

If you go to the Home page and click on the link for Tech Articles, scroll down to Electrical and there is an off site link to the 86 wiring diagrams. That will give you the wiring for both circuits.

The Hazard Flasher should be located on the convenience center. This is under the dash, to the right of the steering wheel. The turn signal flasher should be located in a C clamp just above the convenience center on the steering wheel side.

Re: no turn signals

If your fuses are good and the flashers as well, I'd recommend looking at the C210 - the flat connector under the steering column. It is the multifunction switch connector.
What do you know, it might be just disconnected - simple fix.

But if the C210 is in good shape, get a test light or voltmeter and test the purple wire (should have 12V constantly) and the brown wire (should have 12V with the key on). Those are the power wires from the fuses and flashers (diagram here).

Then you can test the outgoing leads, such as light blue and dark blue, yellow and green. Test them with the hazards on and then with the key on and turn signal on. Check the diagram to see which wire is for which side.

Let us know what you find.

Re: no turn signals

the problem i have is that when i select a turn signal. not even the light will turn on. none of them. for either side. i also had the problem that when i selected the left turn signal it would just stay on and not flash. but that went away now. and neither turn on.

also the c210 connector how far down is it on the steering column?

ill also check my fuses today just to rule that out.

Re: no turn signals

You just need to remove the plastic cover above the pedals and you'll see the flat C210 in the harness. It could be white or it could be black. It looks like this.

Hope this helps.

Re: no turn signals

okay guys after checking on my car today. the hazards do work. and all the bulbs seem fine.

since the hazards work that leave me that the fuse is to blame correct? the b/u fuse you mentioned?

Re: no turn signals

Yes, the TURN B/U fuse under the dash, as Dave mentioned.
I thought you already checked the fuses.

Let us know if that fuse is good.

Re: no turn signals

okay. i solved my problem. turned out the previous owner put a 10 amp fuse instead of the 20 amp that was supposed to be there. i replaced it and now the turn signals work like new. also it seems like the fuse also fixed my code 33 and 36 that it was throwing. which is pretty wierd.

We like easy fixes that don't involve tracing circuits. The tracing can get complicated, especially if one is not familiar with using a meter and having complete wiring diagrams available.

Thanks for letting us know you resolved the problem.
